We are migrating to Canada on an immigrant visa 1M1 in September. We are migrating from India which is our home country till today. I have a brother in USA who wants to gift me a car, microwave oven and television set. Can I declare these items are my personal belongings and include them in the list of items which are to be brought to that country within a period of 1 year from the date of our entry in Canada. I understand that we are required to declare goods which we intend to bring within a period of one year and if it is possible to include the above three items in this list that we could be saved of customs duty when my brother gives it to me from USA. For your information my brother lives in Cleaveland and he can bring the microwave and television set by car.
Many people do this. For Microwave and TV, there is no problem at all, without declaring anything people just bring it to Toronto from US. On border you (your brother) have to just say that I am taking this for my brother at Toronto, and they are used.
For car, same way your brother can gift you, I guess. Only thing you have to pay is transfer fee.
But please make sure with other people before you do anything.
