A letter received by a friend of mine recently :

Manasvi.

Hi XXXX,

Nice to hear from you. Hope you and your family are keeping well.

Yes, my family came with me initially when I migrated to CA. They have been with me all along.

Hmmm, in terms of settling down, I am not sure whether we are really settle down here. I would rather say No...

Life has been tough. Not to my or our expectations. As professionals this is not a country to migrate to. I am glad that your friend has not come here. Job market is horrible, specially IT. It looked as it was picking up, but it hasnt really. I know two of my friends who migrated during the same time as me, are still working for factories doing odd jobs on hourly basis.

I consider my self as very lucky to get into an IT firm, though the salary is far lower than what the market is. However I am just sticking onto it because atleast I am in the field rather than doing factory jobs for hourly wages.

I am afraid to advice people in XX who long to come to this part of the world as they think that we are not telling them the truth. Therefore I let them come and make them experience for themself the situation hear.

XXX , to be honest this country is good for people who are claiming refugee
status, not for professionals. No certification is valid. I too came with Microsoft certifications, What matters hear to get a job is not what you know, its whom you know. Its really really tough.

I am waiting to go back. I have applied for my Citizenship and am waiting for the whole process to complete. As sooner I get it I will be packing my bags. Now you may wonder why the hell am I applying for Citizenship, if the country is not good. The reason is that if I dont then I have nothing, Atleast may be it could help my kids higher education even if not for me. Thats the only reason.

I hope you may have got some idea of what it is to come to this part of the world. There are advantages and disadvantages in this part of the world. For me personnaly, I dont like it, but there are many people who like it too. So it will be good to have others opinion too, before you decide.

When it comes to kids education and future, then it may be OK to come, but if it is for us, then forget it. We will not do any better hear than what we were back home unless you are very very lucky and get a very good job. Other wise you will have to sacrifice your career, status etc for the sake of kids, do odd jobs and then make them educated. The choice is yours...

Will write to you again, Please be in touch and if you need any help or if you have any queries please do ask or write,Give my regards to your family too.

Regards
XXX

Yeah, its certainly one perspective.

I don't dispute the fact that this can be a tough country if you don't have a job. And certainly, the job market is no piece of cake.

At the same time, I get the impression that this gentleman or woman hasn't been in Canada for that long. If he/she has an IT job, even at lower wages, it will be alot easier for him/her to move up to the market level. And depending on how dynamic a person is, you can move up quite quickly.

And I certainly don't agree with the "especially IT market" emphasis. The reality is IT is actually a much better market here than something like say Engineering.
