hi. we want to know how to get a medical insurance for the first 3 months after arriving in canada as the Health Insurance from the Canadian Govt is provided only from the 4th month onwards.

Are there health insurance agents at the airport .

What are the prices like and we would like you to advise us on any numbers that you may have that we could call for this thks.

Some provinces in Canada have waiting period of 3 months and some do not have any waiting period and you are covered from day 1 of landing.

Ontario requires you to wait for 3 months before OHIP kicks in.

so can we apply from day one of landing into canada. kindly advise the documents that they may need.

A friend mentioned that we would need to get an apartment and submit the contract for that to OHIP as well. Is this true??

Yes, you can buy medical insurance from the day of landing. If you buy it after landing, it will be effective after 48 hrs. However, to be effective the moment you land here, you have to buy in advance.

For OHIP although I do not remeber now, but you would be asked to submit proof of residential address that can be bank statement, apt. lease papers or some other evidence.

We are talking about Ontario and OHIP and not Canada as a whole.

You need to have proof of residence and for that you do not have to lease an aparment. If you get a driving license in Canada or bank statment that comes after a month of opening the account that would be sufficient. You will get OHIP card only after 3 months of landing.

For private insurance, you can contact the respective companies and see if they need any documents. You will require a bank account/cheque or a credit card to pay them though!

I think this site can answer some of your settlement questions

we have already opened a bank account with HSBC branch at Finch. we already have bank statements for this account for the last 6 months regularly posted to us in dubai.

We opened this bank account through HSBC dubai but we dont have cheque book or a credit card for this account.

Will these bank statements be sufficient to apply for the OHIP health insurance??

AFAIK you need proof of address in Ontario for OHIP. Bank statements posted to an address in Ontario would be proof.

You can refer to the document checklist.
