Dear Pratickm

I came here on student visa and completed the course, and I am going for my Immigration interview to Detroit. I don’t have job but have HRDC approved Job offer (I can only work after I get my immigration) will this pose any problem for US visit visa??? I don’t know I am scared. Any advice will be much appreciated. Indian guy pls share your interview experience. Will going by flight or going by greyhound make any difference?? Do advice.

:(

I can't tell you whether they will give you a visa or not - you must apply and see what happens.

Things may be different now, and especially when applying in Canada, but up until sometime back, if someone applied for US visa from India (or other S. Asian country) for the only reason of attending Canadian immigration interview, they were refused.

The Canadian Immgiration Usenet newsgroup is full of people stating that they were refused a US visa for attending interview.

The reasoning on the part of the US consulate was that if your don't succeed in your interview (or even if you do), you may decide simply to stay in the US and not bother coming back.
By applying for Canadian PR, a person has already displayed an intent to immigrate out of the home country, so they reckoned tha it is risky to issue a US visa.

Things may be different when applying in Canada and you are already here for some time.

It will be interesting to hear Indianguy's experience once he returns.

Going where?
Your interview is in US Consulate in Canada, right?
It doesn't matter how you get there.
And once you have the US visa, it doesn't matter how you go to the US - flight, car, bus, train or walk !

Hello CD members,

Might be my this post will help you upto certain extent to get visitor visa for usa.

Try to reach the US Embassay which is at 490 Sussex Dr., before 7:30 a.m. By this way you will able to skip standing in big Q. I reached there at 7:25 a.m.

Once the embassay opens at 7:30, security guard standing outside will ask you to show the appointment/interview letter. Later you will asked to move in the embassay

Once you get in there, another security guard will ask you to take off your jacket, belt (i guess for men), whatever things you have in your pocket, watch, etc, etc and will asked you to walk thru the metal detector.

If everything is okay you will be asked to move on to the main room/office. Go there.....that office start at 8:00 a.m.

Pay your fees USD $100 on window 7 and wait there.

My name was announced after 1 - 2 minutes to come down for an interview (they will also announce the window number)....and my interview was the first coz i get there first...lol

Then hi, how are you, etc, etc kicks in with the visa officer. Later, she took my finger prints....left hand first and then right hand...(here was the problem)...She showed me the first finger...and said to do the same so I did..but she keep saying no not that finger...even though I was right...Later your index finger, your index finger, and still i showed the same finger....coz i was right...Finally I showed my second finger to her along with my first finger and she said no the index finger. And then I just showed my index finger once again. Whatever, I guess this situation was to check with me, how do I react even I was right and she was trying to tell me that I was not.

Later I was asked to show my student authorization. After that she asked me to show my current employer and college letter.

After that asked why Canadian Consulate general want to have your interview...so I said the reason and she asked to see that letter also.

After that she said how long you been in Canada and is your family here. I replied that too.

Finally asked where you been to the US before.....and show my your bank statement...

Later I was asked to pay US $50 additional (for multiple entry)...and come back to the same window. Finally she took my passport and said you can get your passport with visa @ 3:00 p.m. from the security guard outside the embassay.

My interview was around 5 minutes and was very general questions. Nuttin to worried about.

Later I got my passport and visa for year and a half.....and I am done now......

Good Luck to everyone who are going for their interview and plz. note all the above things was my experience and can be different to you. Plz. don't consider that you will have the same.

Oh yeah, I wrote the same address of the person whom I know. She is in NJ. Haven't book the hotel, coz I was worried about if they ask me about the confirmation letter from hotel, I guess I can print online if i can get any but can get hard copy from hotel as I was running out of time.

hey pratickm, wanna ask u something...

In the application form i mentioned I will be going to US on march 06, but can i go early instead? might be march 04 evening or march 05 morning?

Secondly, about staying in US.....if i don't stay at the address which I mentioned in the form, instead I book a hotel now and stay near canadian embassay? Is that possible.

Also heard that still US ppl will ask many questions at border...can you share your experience if you have any with that situation.

Thanx

Congratulations on your US visa.
Once you get US visa , now forget about the information you gave in the forms.. ( I mean "hotel address" and "arrival date in USA" )
Yeah, they ppl will ask you many questions at border but they as their security reason.. But you got not to worry....
Cheers

Sure.
The application asks about your "plan", and of course plans change ;)

Sure, again the thing about "plans".
I believe when you fill out the I-94 form before departure from Canada, you should give the real address where you will be staying.
Hopefully, by the time you get to the airport to fly out, you will know where you are going to stay ;)

And don't worry - the address you give in the I-94 won't be correlated back to what you gave on the visa application form.

Not really - at the airport they will ask similar questions as in the consulate.
Why you are going, how long will you stay, where will you stay, and so on.

You have cleared the biggest hurdle - the visa - the rest ought to be cool.
