I have a question regarding the stay/visa duration of visitor visa. It's formy mother and I am having my PR since 7-8 months.
Normally it's 6 months issued by the officer ( website says UPTO 6 months). But if the application is for Multiple Entry, then what additional benefit do I get ?
I know that multiple entry means you can re-enter the country. But is the visa validity long enough ?
A 6 months multiple entry visa is of no use for me. Is it something like 3 years multiple entry visa ? Well the officer may only allow 6 months stay. So, after 6 months go back to home country and come back after few months - you have your visa for 3 years.
Can anybody confirm this ? any details ?
My understanding is that visa duration is not related with the length of stay at all.
What about those people who are issued multiple-entry visas for 10 years?
Does that mean that they can stay for 10 years?
The duration of stay is determined by the officer at the PoE, and as you read on the website, it is usually 6 months by default.
In some cases it can be extended for another 6 months.
Quote:None, as far as duration of stay is concerned.

My In laws landed yesterday with single entry vister visa.Their visa issued in February and expiring on Aug 7,2005.At CustomImmigration counter my in laws mentioned about 6 months stay and also showed the confirm return ticket which is on Sept 23,2005 and POE officer also said OK.They also wrote the same thing in embarakation form.
Now when I checked their passport I could see only one stamp from custom with landing date as March30,2005 but not mentioned about anything till what date they can stay.
Does that mean on visiter visa by default they can stay upto 6 month time from the landing date or they can stay until visa expiry date which is Aug 7,2005.
I actually expecting to see some kind of information like I94 doc in USA where maximum duration of stay strictly mentioned there and that's actually determine the status and not the visa .
Could any one tell me the Canadian rule for identifying duration of stay against a visiter visa

hi..
generally, the stay on any visitor visa, maybe it a simgle entry or multiple entry visa is 6 months..u have to leave the country at the end of 6 months...but then there r ways out of it..when the 6 mnths come to an end, u can apply to extend their stay here in canada..and then it is upto the officer to grant the extension period.
i know many families here whose parents have come here..and got extension after the 6 months period.
hope this info. helps.

Thanks Amit for your fedback.
But specifically I wanted to understand can they legally stay back for next 6 months time after landing date(Upto Sept 29th,2005 they landed on March 30,2005).Or I need to apply for extension if they want to stay beyond Aug 7th ,2005 which is basically their visa expiration date.
Anyway I am not planning to apply for any further extension and they have confirmed return ticket on Sept23,2005...so witout further extension if they can legally stay beyound Aug 7 and upto Sept 23,2005 I am fine.
I was trying to look into the CIC website but nothing specifically written there .
Per CIC website

An officer will ask you a few short questions when you arrive. To make this go quickly, keep your passport with you and not in your luggage.
The officer will stamp your passport or advise you how long you may stay in Canada. Feel free to ask questions if you are unsure about anything.
After you arrive, you may want to change the conditions of your visit. This is possible in special cases. You must do this before your status as a temporary resident expires
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
So my point is how CIC determine status as a temporary resident expired
or not ...is it based on visiter visa expiary date??This is confusing because on passport only custom stamp is there with landing date info.

Our dear friend Sukh provided me following CIC link
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/guides/5551E2.html
This clearly explained if POE officers don't provide any specific validity date other than the landing date visiters can stay back upto 6 months time after landing even visiter visa is expired.
Hope this info will help others.
Now I need to check whether my in laws need UK transit visa as they will be returning with expired Canadian Visa.
Thanks Sukh once again for passing this important CIC link.
