Ariel Sharon is there at the invitation of the Pres. Bush. Modi wasn't.....so yeah, a diplomatic visa is inappropriate under the circumstances (there's nothing 'diplomatic' about Modi's visit), and the US is well within its rights to revoke a visit visa to a person whom they consider inappropriate!

Pretty darn fair I'd say!:D

I guess you got my point about the double standards, which is all I am saying.

BTW, Modi did not apply for a diplomatic visa in the first instance - he had applied for a "business/tourist" visa.
When that was refused, he tried for a diplomatic visa, which was obviously refused.
I agree that his visit is not a "diplomatic" one so that visa does not make sense.

Perhaps not. From what I’ve been reading in the media this afternoon, he intended to enter the US on a diplomatic visa, which the US denied. For good measure, they then revoked his business / visit visa, which had been issued in 1998!

There is precedent to this. The Austrian extremist Jorge Haider has also been denied entry on similar grounds.

While the Indian media has gone to town about this, no one else seems to care! According to Indiatimes article, Congressman Conyers of Michigan tabled a resolution in the House, that may have paved the way for revocation / denial, but the Congressman’s website makes no mention of either such a resolution or any press release by him…….

There is some confusion in the media about this.
It may have been the other way round too.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4360259.stm

This says -
"The US revoked Mr Modi's 'tourist/business' visa under a law that makes "any government official who was responsible for or directly carried out at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom, ineligible for a visa".

Mr Modi's request for a diplomatic visa was also turned down because the purpose of his visit to the US did not qualify him for such a visa, a spokesman for the US embassy in Delhi told the BBC."

This seems to indicate that first his B1/B2 was revoked, and then he tried for the diplomatic visa, which was refused.

Regardless, I don't think anyone loses anything is Modi does not visit the US.
He ought to be pretty happy where he is, and I don't think the Indian community in the US loses much if they don't get to hear Modi's great "speeches" :D

That re-inforces my point about double standards.
The Austrian and Indian right wing leaders are labelled as extremists and communalists, whereas the right wing leader of Israel gets an invitation to the President's personal ranch :D

Cant he go back to the consulate tomorrow and apply again?:D
or is the waiting period a few weeks?

But i agree with Practickm about the double standards.
As much as I despise modi, this move stinks.

One day (when the BJO comes back to power) Modi will be a minister at the centre.

Surely then he can go anywhere he likes.

Maybe Modi can refuse Bush entry into Gujrat when Bush comes around :)
