Do not worry about the school admission process. It is a half an hour process. Your child should start the next grade. If she is not really proficient in English, she will get special attention through ESL(English will be taught by shcool in special classes). The admission is a simple process unlike India. You just walk into the closest school to your residence, with the childs passport, landing papers, SIN card application receipt and the a certificate from your family doctor back home on all the inoculation done(like DPT, Polio, Hep A, Hep B) to date.

The admission is based on the childs Date of Birth and starts school the next day.

No capitation, no recommendation letter and no other certificates required. If you plan to move to another residence, you just go to the new school and inform about your new address and you child starts there and your childs school records get transferred to the new school automatically. I think(I stand corrected) that the law requires your child to get admission(to be admitted) in a school with 2 SQ KM radius of your residence. The only thing you need to check for is the free bus pick up and drop areas which the school would offer.

The child goes to the school with a nice back pack, a lunch box and a drink. Please note to avoid sending any food items to your child containing nuts (for eg: peanuts: peanut and jelly sandwich) as many children here are allergic to nuts, and if your child shares his/her sandwich or snack it would lead to problems. No uniforms in public schools(only in catholic schools). The school provides the pencils, erasers and all the other required stationary items. If your child oversleeps on a day, and does not go to school, no problems. Nobody asks and no leave letters. If she misses a test, it will be scheduled on another day.Teachers are addressed by their names like Ms.Fernandez or Mr.Evason and NOT Sir/Madam.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Lots of good information and explained in a good manner!

However, some need corrections/additional comments:

There is no law as such!
Each school has its clearly defined boundaries which are basically not a radius but specific roads (which are usually main roads) So it is not always a perfect square or rectangle but a different figure. However, these boundaries also means that at times your house may fall in one school's boundaries but the one accross the street will fall in some other school's boundary. This is only in case of a road where two boundaries meet. So be careful when choosing a house. You might think that it falls in one desired school's boundary but it might not!

I do not think that is true. My children have been studying here for 5 years and my wife has taught in more than 32 schools in the York region and we have never come across such a provision for supplies. Or in case there is such a rule, the schools do not have enough funds to supply the material.

I do not know about other school boards but in the York Region schools, if your child misses any period/s, there is an automated call before the end of the day informing you of the absence and requesting you for a written letter of leave.
