My Standard response to some typical Gora questions

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gora: India is sooo backward!
Desi: Ya, that's why all your Tech Jobs are going there :p
-------------------------------------

Gora: How do you keep in touch with folks back home?
Desi: It is very simple. We send them an email or chat online.
Gora: You mean you have Computers and Internet in India????
Desi: No, the companies here communicate with their IT departments in India using Pigeon Mail! See that one flying! it is carrying your job description to a Programmer in India :D
------------------------------------------------------------

Gora: Wow! You speak good English
Desi: Thank You, so do You! :D
Gora: I mean, for a person having come from India only a year ago, you've certainly learnt English very quickly.
Desi: I know, isn't it great! I've been speaking English for only 27 years.
Gora: What! You mean they taught you English in India? How is that possible?
Desi: Well, you see, long ago these British Merchants came to India to trade....... and the rest is History.. ;)

When I was in TO Ive been asked about how I learnt English as well. Ofcourse many of us take our english skills for granted and are taken aback by this question. However, if you look at it from another perspective, many immigrants e.g: polish, chinese, italian, russian, srilankan, iranian, indians, srilankans etc...do not speak very good english. This is especially true with the older immigrants e.g: my neighbours Portugese parents do not speak much English...they have picked up French and speak it fluently, apart from their mother tongue.

Its understandably(atleast to me) confusing for some people as to how some immigrants speak good english while others do not.

Its not just 'goras' who have asked me this question but Canadians of different races. Its probably true for others aswell, but its probably due to the fact that 'goras' are a majority here that we tend to generalise.

BTW: not casting judgement on anybody but do all of you feel comfortable using the term 'Kalia' for blacks etc. I mean should we really be dwelling so much on the race? 'American' and 'Canadian' should do shouldnt it? I could be wrong, ofcourse.

My supervisor gori came to office and started narrating about the program she saw. I did not see it.

This is what I am referring to: Have u had youe head shaved....etc. etc.

Another good answer for DT to the above question:

Yes why not? it is better than having your bikini area shaved (as is so common here) which no one gets to see!:D

Ideally, it should.

I think reference to other groups of people with their race comes along when one is either left out (or has a feeling of being left out). Then you start looking at the other group in terms of the most general form of grouping.

For example and immigrant who might struggle here will start calling the Local people as Goras....even though in the GTA area there are quite a few people of different races who are citizens. So if he goes to an interview and is rejected he wont blame the person, company, city or even country....he will start with "gora"....you get the point.

Most 3rd world people of color who come here have been at some point under colonial rule. That is another reason they immediately fall into the race trap.

It seems unreasonable, but thats how it is.
I too sometimes think in those terms.

The other thing is In North america one has to be very politically correct in public.

I guess, the first step would be to analyze if it is advantageous to oneself OR to society at large to think in those terms. If it is so, for whatever reason, then I guess one can keep thinking in those terms. Similarly if one finds it is not, they will probably stop thinking in those terms too.

Alls well :)
