Why do desi immigrants have problems finding jobs? Let me have my 2 c here. I have listed positives and negatives in relation to jobs/office. Please add on as I may have missed out few items.

Positives
1. Education
I believe we have very good fundamentals. Our education system makes sure we are good in what we have study. School system is good specifically in Maths, Science, etc. We have some of the best colleges/universities, in par with Canada and USA. Most of the immigrant desis have at least a degree or higher. Like me, some of us have studied (masters, PhD) in Canada/USA/Europe.

2. Work
We desis know how to slog. I don’t have to go over this in detail. Most of us are hard workers, no doubt.

Negatives

1. We talk fast, as if we are in a hurry to go somewhere. That needs to be corrected.

2. We don’t listen. We try to interrupt to make our point thereby annoying others. Listening is crucial, people open up and tell lot of things. U can pick up lots of good pointers/information when u listen.

3. Most of us tell it straight. Look at the locals. Most of them go round and round, putting a spin on everything. Most of us don’t do that since we were not taught to do those things. To some extent, perception plays a big role (e.g. walking briskly with some papers in hand to show that u r busy with some very important tasks).

4. We don’t use the jargons used by the locals (e.g. we need to think outside the box). Observe the managers in your office or the interviewing staff. Again most of us say things straight, may be from the heart.

5. Be nice to other fellow desis also apart from the locals. Nothing wrong with that. U never know, which desi will be of help in the future. Being nice only to goras/goris and not for others shows that one is a racist/bigot. That's not a good tag for a desi .

There is always room to improve. Only thing is that one needs to figure out what there drawbacks are and then correct them.

(please add to the list)

1. Lesser team work
2. I havent come across any Chinese, Phillipino or European saying anything bad about their home-countries, and no whining about Canada either. I request Desis to give correct picture of India, explaining the diversity of cultures, values, living strata etc.
3. Tendency to express Superiority over other desis

Have you not heard about crabs in an open basket. They could all escape but none does. Why? Because they are desis!!! A crab trying to climb out is pulled down by the other crabs!! Typical desi crab!:D

1. Our N. American communication skills are poor.
Most Desis think communication means having good English language skills.
N. American communication means the whole works eg. body language, greeting with firm hands, eye contact, small talk before business talk, jokes at office, written correspondence, communicating thru diagrams and sketches, dressing etc. etc.

2. We try to be too polite. (Sometimes this is negative)
eg. we say thank you, thank you many times even when not required. This has become a joke going around in Canadian social circles.

3. Our English accent sounds terrible and artificial, especially when we try to copy the locals. The accent should be more natural and to speak more slowly and clearly.

Right on. Agree with these 100%.
Most desis try to please the locals, by making a fool of themselves. Speak with an accent, but slow, crips and no grammatical mistakes.

I have also observed that many desis don’t open up. They are very secretive. They think that by doing so they are protecting their turf (whatever it is), but very soon they are be exposed and lose credibility. Once u show that u don’t have the credibility, others feel drop u like a hot potato. There is no need to tell everything, at the same time don’t hide as much as possible as if u had committed some big crime.
