We will find a way or we will make one
Assuming (and just assuming) that you are a Indian passport holder (which you have not mentioned, but have still asked for visa requirement) - you will need a tourist visa to enter Singapore if you are going to be there for more than 24 hrs, or else trasit visa could be stamped at the airport itself.
Being an Indian - a visit to Mohammed Muftafa on the Serangoon Road is almost mandatory, if not to shop, just to see how truckloads of people go there and shop in that dept store of four floors each in two buildings adjacent to each other. Depending on your budget, and your priorities, you can either stay in the guest house/hotel run by the same store, or one of the hotels on the same street, or in Peninsula Hotel/Excelsior Hotel on Coleman Street (another mixed Indian area close to almost everything), or on Orchard Road which is like the fashion district the place to be.
Take a stroll on the orchard Road (about 2 miles long) to see the scores of modern shopping centres and latest fashions, take a ride on the subway system- the best I have seen till date (and I have seen quite a few) called MRT and if you can eat non-veg, definitely eat 'Satay' - a malay bar-b-q (chicken or mutton on wooden skewers cooked on charcoal), and mee- goreng (fried noodles), another malay dish, and Roti Prata/Martabak (a roti made of maida and filled with meat and prepared like a parantha). But to get the real taste, don't eat that in a restaurent, but on street side hawker centres. Yes definitely go and visit a hawker centre and discover how scores of different stores serve food at the same time and you can sit anywhere - and each of them has its own crockery which seems similar to other store's crockery but never gets mixed up! A sophisticated hawker centre is Lau Pa Sat on the Shenton way and if you go there for dinner, they lay tables on the street (a 100 meter stretch which is closed to vehicular traffic in the night).
As for site seeing - Sentosa - an island 10 minutes ferry ride from the main island is a good place to go, and so are the bird's park and the Night safari. Yes, another attraction that has come up in recent years is the Esplanade - a stroll there would be worth the while.
While you can do most of these things using public transit (buses and subway are really good there), taxis are not too expensive and can be used if need be - though there is not much savings in time since the distances are not too much!

In addition to what chandresh has said,
If you want convenience, there are many conducted sight seeing tours, you can check with the website mentioned. If you want to enjoy night life there is no place like Boat Quay and Clarke Quay along the Singapore River. Even if you don’t go to bar/night club it’s a good place for a stroll. If you are in to nature, visit Singapore Botanical Garden and National Orchard Garden. If you want to see authentic Singapore go to Pulau Ubin. It’s a wonderful little island. I have eaten the best testing shrimp/prawns in my life. Other food to try out is Chilly Crab, Fish Head Curry, Singapore Laksa. As Chandresh said don’t go to restaurant instead go to food court or hawker center.
About shopping, computer, electronics and especially photographic equipments are cheaper in Singapore, but beware of fraud. Singapore is also famous for its custom made suits and they can get you one in couple of hours. You will find them mainly on orchard road.
Thanks Chandresh and Macman for your valuable time and advice. It seems u guys really enjoyed your trip to Singapore and have some nice memories of that place, that makes me even more eager to visit there!
I did not visit Singapore!
I lived there for 13 years before coming to Canada!
