Hi all,

I got my visa a few days back, and it is valid till March 2006.

About us, myself 43 years young graduate ready to work in Clerical, Admin., Sales, Data entry, Call Center, Market Research (present field) etc. Wife M.Sc.+B.Ed tuition teacher makes more than a full time school teacher. Son 13 yrs. (in 8th standard very good in sports and games). Daughter 11 yrs (in 6th standard).

At this point I have to make a decision whether to move Permanently now or collect PR card now and return within 3 years. Seeking your valuable advice,
my options are

OPTION1 to enter before March 2006 and return to Muscat and move permanently within 3 years.

Advantages 1. Children will be bigger and will understand the cultural
difference better.
2. Better high school education in Muscat (debatable).
3. Wife gets the Teaching License within 1 year.
4. Can save some money during this 3 years time.
5. I can try some certification such as CMA (usa) & CCNA.
6. We can see for ourselves what life is like in Canada.

Disadvantages 1. when returning to Canada we will be older by about 3
years which will affect the employability.
2. The visit to get the PR card will be a costly vacation.

OPTION2 resign the present job and enter permanently.

Advantages 1. Save one-way Air fare say about 3k.
2. Younger so relatively better adaptability.

Disadvantage High Risk as we don’t know the actual condition, if
things don’t work out we don’t have anything in
Gulf to fall back on.

Thanks in advance to all your valuable contributions

Tom

Hi,
Go through all the posts in this forum, ask as many doubts you have, take all your sweet time before leaving your present situation, only after that take your decision.
All this so that you have no regrets later , had I known it before I would never have left my job\country\etc etc

Hey Tom,

An important factor to help you decide should be how much you are making in Oman at the moment. Additionally, how much would you be able to save in another 3 years time, by delaying your plans for Canada.
You dont have to answer me, just help yourself with these questions.

I didnt understand what you mean by "....myself 43 years young graduate ready to work .."

Life in GCC countries has become quite expensive in the past two years....another point to ponder for your future planning and savings....

Hi Tom,

I suggest you to utilise the 3 years time period to do more research in your field and prepare yourself in all aspects including your bank balance. Your first trip will help you understand the situation better.

I had been to Canada in 2003 for a short trip and still not decided when & how to move permanently!

Good Luck

ETH

It may be a bit easier for the kids to absorb the culture if you moved earlier.

On the other hand, as you point out, you will be older and may find it a bit more difficult to get a job if you move permanently at a later time. Maybe you can use this time researching your job prospects and preparing yourself for your return to Canada. Having a little more money helps.

Let them come to canada after 12 th for graduation then afterwards they can get a job here and settle down. Then you can follow them after wards.

Hi Omantom,
You must have thought about all these points before you applied for immigration. Right? My suggestion is that you take the plunge. You won't learn swimming if you keep dilly-dallying at the edge of the pool. Even if you decide to wait for another 3 years, then what is the guarantee that no other obstacles will crop up between you and your decision to immigrate. Furthermore, if you take the plunge then you will have no other option but to work hard to succeed in Canada. But if you decide to play the waiting game then doubts and indecision will keep cropping up in your mind and you might not land up in Canada at all.
Coming to the issue of children. Remember that children are more versatile and adaptable to new environments than adults. They will mould themselves in no time. It will take you and your wife a lot of trouble to adjust to the culture shock.
Age, too, is not on your side. The final decision is up to you.
Anyway, whatever you decide.......Best of luck.
