Hi,

I am happy to know that CD has so many members from Vancouver. I needed some information and would really appreciate your help.

We are a family of four (my husband, me and two sons below 13). We had decided to go to Toronto but had change of plans as my husband is taking admissions in BCIT, which has branches in Vancouver and Burnaby. Please if anyone can advise which of these two areas is better and safer to stay and if you have any contacts / links for rental accommodation. We will be landing in Vancouver in Feb 2006.

Appreciate your suggestions:) .

I think in your case, Burnaby Metrotown area is worth considering, especially with the excellent public transport and access to all kinds of shopping at your doorstep.

There is a bus every 10 mins from Metrotown that takes less than 20 mins to reach BCIT Burnaby campus. Even if you have to go to the Vancouver campus, you can take the skytrain from here. It is certainly cheaper than living in Vancouver. We live in this area too, and there are many apartment complexes with a "Vacancy" sign posted outside.

We've been here for over 4 months, and didn't find the need to buy a car all along.

Safety-wise, it seems ok. I've heard about some petty thefts in the past, but we've found it quite decent here.

Not sure about the schools around, though.

Good luck with the move!

Quite Right ;)

Burnaby & Surrey are recommended areas for Desis - prob coz the cost of living is lesser . I wonder if the salaries are higher in Van then they are at GTA ? for the same job perse .Understandably Van must be a slightly stress free life due to lesser traffic and smaller distances .Is that correct?

Distance is a relative term I guess. I drop and pick up my husband from his office everyday. His office is 5 miles from our home. But it takes anywhere between 12 to 25 minutes depending upon the traffic. Sometimes it is so frustrating to drive for minutes together, just to do a little shopping. Parking is another problem.I think one should be an expert in parellel parking,so as to squeeze your car in a tight spot.
Rent is not cheap in Burnaby. But if you go to Main street, or Fraser, and look into all those pillars for flyers , you get to see a lot of rental ads, for basements, which are somewhat cheap, in Vancouver , Surrey and Burnaby. Also, all those free local newspapers, including Desi ones, have a lot of ads for reasonably cheap accomodation.

Most of the shops close by 8 pm and the road is having a very light traffic after 6pm, which is a very big differnce, from what you see in the USA.
I think, you may have less stress if you have a good job.;)
