Hi,

Canada badly needs an auto train that links the eastern provinces with those on the west.

The economic impact of having an Auto train is quite significant. Some of them are:

(i) Right now most of Canadian provinces have 70-80% of their trade with their Sothern neighbour (US) while the inter provincial trade accounts to only 20-30%. This leads to a situation where Ontario and Quebec had to buy oil from the US while Alberta had to sell it's excess oil to the US. (An oil pipe line from Alberta to Ontario would be better?)

(ii) Huge dependence on US economy makes Canada catch fever when US sneezes. Increasing East-West interprovincial trade to atleast 50-60% would cushion Canada to some extent from any problems with the US economy

(iii) Increased movement of people between various provinces would help greater economic and political integration. In the US it is common to see Cars having number plates from neighbouring states. Unfortunately it is very rare to see that in Canada

(iv) Increased public transportation would encourage population dispertion rather than population getting concentrated in few well developed provionces

Right now we have 'Roll on - Roll off' service for trucks in Ontario but having an Auto train would be a great asset. Any ideas from others?

"Ration ki baat kar, bhashan dena hai toh kisi election mein jaake khade ho jaa" (Johnny Lever in Deewana Mastana)....

But other than that what is an "auto train" ? CanRail already exists ..so does the CanPacific ? Dont they transfer goods from West to the east and vioce-versa ?

Quebec, being on a separate grid was able to avoid the BLACKOUT of 2003...!!! while ontario, linked up with Michigan had to suffer a blackout !

Auto Train is a train which would carry both cars and passengers

Amtrak runs one such train from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford Florida

Hmmm and MA...as you have quoted amtrak..you should also know this...
It is a loss making entity (more like Indian PSU's)..it always is need of Govt Handouts...Do you think such a business proposition will be feasible in Canada ? Considering the population is less ? You can only make it feasible if , say goods that land in the Halifax harbour can be quickly transported to BC..but then again..you dont need that a Vancouver has a harbour itself.

You also mentioned something abt US sneezing and Canada catching a fever ! Well sadly my friend..it sure is true! It thus makes me wonder...why this farce of having a separate border..Why not have a common currency...Will solve most problems (if not all of them) ? But then you have the rednecks in the west (mostly Alberta..that racism-prone province)..who dont like anything American..and yet love evrything remotely connected with the USA !

One the reasons Amtrak (and many other public transport companies) are not faring well in the US is due to the simple reason that Gas is cheap in the US. That makes at times driving by car a cheaper alternative than going by public transport.(I myself never used Amtrak as it was quite costly affair). Now that is not the same in Canada.

As for Goods transport, we already have Intermodal transport facilities in Canada for several years now where trucks drop of their containers to be loaded on to the trains which will be unloaded later on to trucks at the destination. This has been a win-win system for both trucking companies and the railway companies.

Photo below show's CPR's intermodal facilities

Because both countries are different. (on the face they may look similar)

A few simple reasons:
US has massive budget deficit. Canada has budget surplus.

US has massive trade deficit. Canada has trade surplus.

US trades with China (communist country) at the same time has sanctions against Cuba . Canada has diplomatic ties with Cuba

US doesn't have a good public funded health care. If you don't have insurance, you don't have any health care. prisciption drugs cost way too high.

And most importantly - US intervenes in the internal affairs of many other countries around the globe resulting in backlash against US and American citizens

You want some more reasons?
