I have always used Car as I enjoy long drives. On top of that Drive to NJ in Fall will be colorful. I have driven to NJ for quite a time and drive is comfortable.
With Car comes Flexibility/Convenience and Economy.
Why don't you fly into Newark, instead of wasting upto a day in driving/bus/train ???

You could look up Buffalo-Newark flights. They can be pretty cheap at times. Try Continental. You can either park at Buffalo airport if you are driving(check the Buffalo airport website, they have a 10% off coupon for parking), or take a Greyhound to Buffalo, and a cab to the airport.
I enjoy the drive at times too. Tip: If you plan to be at the border early morning, you will save time getting through.
If you want to avoid some extra miles and like driving through countryside while driving to NJ ,take the Batavia town exit on I-90 and go through route 63 - 36 -17 east to Corning and Binghampton. You could reach NJ taking this scenic route saving on gas , and some toll fees
