AND,

To answer your Q - Yes. I know of people living on an salary lower than that in Toronto

You missed my point - What is the source of that figure, and for which city. Canada is a vast country and the cost of living differs from city to city

36-38K seems to be a start off point for "most" IT recruits here....
But oh well!!!, I 've seen weird numbers... ;) people jumping from 45K to 90K...:D and then some starting at 55K+ :)..and some stuck in a +10K range for years and years...

IMO amongst others, depends on :
a) ur negotiation skills ("SOFT SKILLS" reiterated within)
b) the hour of the need
c) ur expectations, which may get skewed when u get wrong inputs...,
d) and lastly, ur IT skills. (Every other applicant claims to have it ) ;)

;) :p bison

I think it is a good start and better than not having a job and hunting for one .

besides, you can always move onto a better one when you find it :)

Hello chittesh,

If you have always wanted to move to a developed country and if you have done your dd about canada, here is my suggestion.
(Again do your own DD before deciding).

1) Take the offer. Ask for relocation help without any obligation (like a 1 year contract). Dont move with the family. Let the family join after point 7 below. Why I am saying without family is in the mean time you can stay in a shared accomodation (about 300$ + $400 Food + $300 other expenses and thus may be more easy on you...)
2) Move to Toronto. (More job Opportunities)
3) Work for about 6 months.
4) update resume on Workoplis and monster.
5) Get some good offer which is more then 31 k they are offering.
6) Ask them if they can match or mention I am constrained to move.
7) In any case inspite of their counter offer always move out. But this way it is more professional....

Else if 5, 6 fails and if you do not like it ask them to move you back to India.....

Yes i agree that IT field is ok for now. I do not see any stagnation at all.

Best of Luck.
rp

But a start @50K in IT is very common again depends on your field of expertise (you do not mention that at all and your luck)

i think u r very lucky as u r landing with a job in pocket . i think
after tax u will get around 2000 dollars pm which is sufficient to
live a simple life. my calculation is:
food $ 400
car $400 ( including gas, insurance)
rent /mortgage 900
misc. 200
u seems okay with cost of living , though at this
stage no savings.
i also advise u to move with family. i made the mistake of
going there alone. i felt frustrated and came back in india.
i think keeping family not increase cost of living signifacantly.
rather u feel relaxed in company of ur family.

Ok, make following assumptions
1. Average time to get a job - say good job = 3 months.
2. You get a good job of 45K (after 3 months).

You got your 45K job after 3 months. So you lost 3 months pay. Which is (45K/12*3) = $11250.
So basically your 45K job is as good as 45,000 - 11,250 = $33750 - If you had it on the very first day of landing. Not too different from your 31K.
Now if you join your 31K job, you will be having your job on the day u land.

Chittesh, I guess your options is not to be totally discarded !
