Racial profiling at its best! This guy was killed because ‘he appeared Asian’!

Where are all those folks that sing praises of the HSMP?

"He was followed by surveillance officers as he boarded the bus and went to the station, and officials said his clothing and behaviour at the subway stop added to their suspicions. Officers followed him into the station and then ordered him to stop, police said. Witnesses said Menezes ran into a subway car, where officers shot him.

It was unclear why Menezes, who spoke English, did not obey the orders to stop. "

If I was in the place of those officers...I would have probably done the very same thing as they did. Disobeying officers and running away into the subway...especially given the events of the preceding week is not exactly the wisest thing to do.

The IRA said this after one of their failed bombings..
“Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always.”

(In a paradox this quote by terrorists has been paraphrased often by a lot of people... even by Bush :D )

The first eyewitness accounts from Saturday suggested that the individual was pinned to the ground by 2 officers, a third officer who had already drawn his weapon then pumped 5 rounds into the blokes head at point blank range.

What is also being acknowledged is that the significant factor behind the decision to kill was that the individual had ‘Asian features’.

In terms of why he ‘disobeyed orders to stop’ – the officers were in plainclothes and had drawn their weapons. In his place, I’d probably take evasive action too. Besides, from all of the eyewitness accounts coming thru, he had already been subdued at the point of time when he was shot.

Bottomline is, if you ‘have Asian features’, happen to walk out from one of the thousands of areas on London that are under surveillance and into a subway stop, plainclothes officers could use a ‘shoot to kill’ policy.

That sort of fear psychosis, is probably what the terrorists wanted anyway!

Could...but they are not going to get away scott free. They are still accountable for their actions.

The fact was that it was four 'Asian featured' guys(for the most part) who did the earlier bombings and took part in the failed ones. It seems
the guy had an expired visa...and thats why he ran. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4713753.stm

I'd strongly dissuade you from visiting London and taking the evasive action he took :) . If a cpl of blokes in rush hour traffic in London point a gun at me and ask me to stop...thats what I'll do...especially if they identify themselves as officers(I'm assuming they did in this instance).

And these tactics about subduing and shoting in the head...its borrowed from the manuals of anti-terrorist orgs from around the world. You cannot chance the guy(if he was a bomber) detonating the bomb...he probably needed only one hand free...if at all. There could have been another person who is actually detonating the bomb...so even allowing him to stand up erect could expose bystanders to the effects of an explosion(which would have been muted if he was lying on the bomb...with the other officers lying on him...who would have taken the brunt of any explosion)

Notice that the officers put thier lives at stake(unless one uses the argument that they were acting out of hate). Even the one who shot the guy.

I'm with the officers on this one...these decisions are not easy to make.

BTW: Bombers do have a 'Bomb to kill' policy. I do not think a 'shoot to tickle' policy would be a deterrent. :D

No you don't. Shooting people dead without sufficient provocation is NOT how police is expected to work!

The guy obviously panicked, and given the situation, that is a convincing possibility. Even if they had to shoot, they could have done it to disable the man, by shooting in the leg for example. The man did not wield any weapon, and was not an immediate threat to anyone at the time!

Killing people because someone has a bulging midriff/wearing clothes not appropritae for a season is most stupid and cowardly to say the least.

DGTC.... Maybe you needed that guy to come and explode a BOMB near you :o

Come on yaar... The police did what they had to do....You should be sensible enough to know that when you are in a war zone, you should follow the rules of war...
