Not sure if you have seen this already, but you can check out this site http://www.rentbc.com to get an idea of apartments/houses for rent in Burnaby/Vancouver. We found this helpful during our apartment hunt a few months back.

While Metrotown is very good with respect to all conveniences, don't take just my word for it. Most areas in Burnaby are well connected by bus and/or skytrain.

If you were prepared for the cold weather in Toronto, you should be ok in Vancouver, since the climate is a lot more moderate here.

You know jughead after you suggested Metrotown, Burnaby, I have been checking on the net for all the places in Burnaby and found that metrotown is just the place I was looking for.
I am from Mumbai and like crowded places, that means all the shopping complexes, malls and close proximity to the basics. At the same time it provides the safe environment I was looking for the kids.
