:)
Before we all start singing \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"sare Jahan se\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in the jingoistic fervor.. it\\\\\\\\'s a very well-known lack of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"product\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" companies in Indian scenes.. Why would that be?? iFlex was till very recently touted as one of the rare gems for the same reason.. why would that be?? If you read carefully what Mundie said.. he didn\\\\\\\\'t really break any new ground.. That Indian engg. schools put too much preference on theory and not enough on software engineering is well-known.. in the course of 4 yr .. students end up doing 1 ( max 2 for enterprizing students) projects ground up...Source Code writing as a normal life happens only after one gets thro\\\\\\\\' engg. It\\\\\\\\'s nothing derogatory and yes there are side-effects to that one of which is lack of many student coders.. or garage startups in India..
I manage teams in India.. and yes that fact does come out.. original thinking and ability to conceptualize business problems into s/w models and implemented solutions come to Indians after 3-4 yrs of on the job experience.. partly becoz first 2-3 yrs are spent in the very first projects..
out 100 fresh grads out of Indian schools.. about 30-35 have done prior source code writing for more than 2 projects.. and it shows in the initial quality.. Mundie was talking abt compiler, Assemblers, optimization, systems programming, graph theory .. basically your basic programming skill.. not run of a mill JSP page painting.. when you look at it that way.. yah.. it\\\\\\\\'s a problem..
No need to scream and howl.. now that it\\\\\\\\'s identified.. response should be more projects from first yr.. Hands on coding assignments for every project/subject... preparing students for not just theory of computation but also business of it.. exposure to costing, patent protection, CMM levels, IP protection, project planning etc. and meanwhile there should be local solutions to \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"local\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" problems.. When India starts to modernize it\\\\\\\\'s business a la US .. we will have another boom in IT for another 10 yrs.. If Information is business .. in a developing economy like India .. opportunities for that are endless.. but solutions can\\\\\\\\'t be designed by US architects.. just as very first solutions for US business issues came from local architects.. that I beileve is what he was talking abt..
but as always.. Indians take every little word from any outsider as much more than a comments.. sometimes.. things are just what they are said.. nothing more.. nothing less..

In response to Indione's comments - IIT, IIM grads are the cream and nobody disputes that. But IIT alumni make up maybe 0.05% of the total IT population?

We are talking about the average Joe MCA graduate who does not understand fully CS101.

And why companies are here - cheap labor. In spite of the rework etc, it is still more economical to get it done in India. I explained the math in my previous post.

On the bright side, those who are reasonably competent are highly sought after and get fantastics offers.

Right on. Even if they are reasonably comoetent. Imagine if someone is highly competent. No wonder IIT, IIM grads get very good offers on campus. I am not from IIT or IIM, but I always have respect for those institutions.

My argument was not \" sare jahan se acha IT hamara\". I have a problem when people generalise. Just because some guys have a problem dealing with maybe what I say \"hole in the wall companies\", all software guys and Companies in India are \"inferior\". The argument that software work goes to India just because it is \"cheaper\" is again not tenable. There must be some quality associated with it, if it has grown to a $ 18 billion industry.
