"This is for one of my friend. My friend's wife came on student visa and her husband (my friend) came as a dependant with an open work permit. He is working in IBM - Toronto in IT field. As he is a dependant of his wife, he got work permit till the date of his wife's study permit.

Now.... his wife's study permit is expiring in couple of months and she will move on Post Graduate work permit. So what are the options available for her husband (my friend) who is a dependant... What are the ways of extending his visa ? He wont be dependant anymore when his wife will get PG work permit.
I know only one option that is student visa..... Is there any other intelligent option does any one have ?
Thanks in advance guys"

I have the same question. I am holding a PG work permit which is expiring soon. Though my husband holds a PG work permit for longer period. Can I apply for extension of my PG work permit based on his PG work permit? And if I can, Am i still eligible to apply for PR in CEC category?

Thank you very much for that info "Canada_Hope"....
It is possible to extend my friend's visa on based of his wife's PG work permit.
We have confirmed that with CIC..
So yea.. Its a good news.... He doesn't neet switch to Student visa.... He can extend his work permit.....
Cheers up...

I do not know if you got full info from call centre ....many times you don't.

Anyway ... it is like this. Your friend can get work permit only in 3 ways.

1. Your friend's wife should have an offer for a skilled job ( NOC O, A or B). Just a offer is good enough so that your friend can apply for open work permit ( BEST OPTION). Without this your friend will not be given Work Permit.

2. Your friend's wife should continue to be a student in a public college so that your friend can continue to maintain the work permit.

3. Your friend should get an offer from a company with approved positive LMO

If you are the same person, 'PSK', in my previous response, I would first request you and your Fiance to prepare yourselves to get married here within Canada and obtain a Marriage Certificate first. It might take three weeks or so. You both will find it advantageous in your tax filing also.

After that you will be Man and Wife. He becomes your Husband after that.

NOW you both are dependent on each other. That relationship gets cemented and you will have a lot of previleges after that under the law.

YES to your query and you can ride on each oother's coat tails after that.

Now to the PR Question : Here is some helpful information to you both. See how you can swing it in your favoour after you read the information.

Please bear in mind that your Language proficiency is valued more in your application for PR under the CEC Class.

WHICH IS : """To further ensure an even distribution of occupations, no more than 200 applications will be accepted from any occupations designated as ‘B’ level in Canada’s National Occupation Classification (NOC) index. B level jobs are generally technical, administrative, or skilled trades. NOC levels ‘A’ and ‘0’, which are managerial and professional in nature, are not subject to the individual 200 cap, although they are subject to the overall cap of 12,000.

Procedural Change...
To increase fairness and efficiency, applications to the CEC will have their proof of language proficiency assessed upon receipt of their file. This means that if an application does not meet language requirements, it will be immediately returned to the sender with a refund in processing fees. This will help government officers quickly return files that are not eligible, therefore giving applicants ample time to consider other options for permanent residency.

What this Means for Applicants

The CEC remains a highly popular program due to its straightforward application procedures and fast processing times. These changes have been made to make sure that the program keeps its reputation as an ideal option for temporary foreign workers from a variety of backgrounds.

However, the introduction of caps has may increase pressure on eligible individuals who have not yet submitted their applications."""

Also if you need further help and you happen to be in the GTA area, there are Immigrant Help Centers that I can direct you to where they will help you with filling in the application forms, for FREE, when you drop into those centers and get personal attention from a representative there. They will also give you proper directions to you to follow.

Good Luck.

FH.
