Airtel has Internet connection? I did not know. When u say VOIP (with a 416 number), I am lost. Can u please elaborate how it works with 416 area code?
Yes, Airtel does provide internet connection in all the major cities back home.
The VOIP service they are using is provided by G3Telecom here in Canada. I sent them the adaptor which they hooked to their internet connection. Thus, they have a 416 number in India and can make and recieve local calls to and from GTA, all for $9.99 a month....works like a charm!
Coming back to the speed of the internet connection...it is as good as any high speed connection you get here.

With the Airtel calling card (Rs. 2500), I think one can make calls from their mobile to Canada for Rs. 2 per minute.

As far as speed is concerned, I think MTNL/BSNL provides the best high speed connectivity for internet. But you do need landline for that. Also, normally there is no problem but if the network is down, it takes couple of days to start working again.
Reliance, Tata-VSNL, Sify, YOU, Hathway and many other private players also provide high speed internet connectivity. I would recommend MTNL, Reliance, Tata-VSNL depending on the connectivity in the area that you live in.
