On the other note, If I wish to take a laptop from here to give someone in India, what will be the protocol at Delhi/mumbai airport...
How much custome duty, red channel etc..
Any inputs will be appreciated!

Regards

I believe you are allowed to take a laptop for someone else without any declaration. My wife has done it before. You may also remove all the packaging and just take the laptop. That not only saves valuable space, but also will receive less scrutiny if there were to be one.

Since flights tend to arrive late night into India, there is this inconvenience of waiting for the counters to open up. Other than that, it's mostly smooth sailing.

No, that was not the case on my return. My bags were checked from Chd to Toronto.I went to the airline counter in Delhi thinking I will have to identify the bags atleast but I had do do nothing and got the bags in Toronto. The experience was absolutley smooth as compared to horrible in the inbound flight.

That's the reason I stressed on thru check-in to OP.

Corect, That's what I said too. Chandigarh was not your port of entry, Delhi was; hence had to claim at Delhi, do this ID of bags and re-checkin or drop off at Delhi for Chd.

However, Toronto was your port of entry and happened to be the final destination, hence you were able to check in from Chd to Tor.

If you were flying beyond Toronto, you would have had to claim your bags at Toronto (even if the bags were checked in for the entire route), clear immigration and customs and drop off your bags again for your next flight even if your bags were checked through final destination.
