Hi,
Please please don't ever make the mistake of not getting a will made. In India people are very naiive and willingly make mistakes and then expect the next generation to face the problems. I'm telling this from personal experience and because of the same problem (no will made by grandfather), the entire family is suffering now... In India the judicial process is killing...literally....financially and mentally....so please don't fall into such a mess....
Please persuade your parents anyhow...talk to them, ask their friends to convince them, take them to a good (trustworthy) lawyer, get proper advice and request them not to create future problems for you and your siblings...but get a will made anyhow and then get it registered. The will must have 2 witnesses. If your siblings are willing to be witnesses thats even better... Do the proper legal process and get it completed on your next visit to India.
All the best !

Even with the will, if the heir is not an Indian Citizen, should that person be an OCI or PIO to inherit? Would being an OCI or PIO make the process any easier for the heir? Thanks.

No need to mention in the will that the heir is a citizen of some XYZ country (not India). Why should others know that the heir is not an Indian citizen. Heir could be an NRI, PR of Canada or GC holder of USA. Still they have Indian passport.
If the heir has OCI or PIO, it does not make any difference. The process remains the same.

Thanks all for the responses. I guess my next step is how to get as much as possible done from here and hopefully get this resolved in my (all too brief) visit.
Can you guys recommend any lawyers in Hyderabad/Secunderabad? What is the Indian equivalent of the yellow pages? I am frankly terrified of handing over such an important matter to what may turn out to be some guy with an email account but I guess I don't have much choice. Personal recommendations would be hugely appreciated.
I will try out the YourManInIndia link. Thanks for suggesting it, north yorker.

Forget yellow pages or other websites. As they say in Telugu, dongalunnaru jaagratha. Go by the reference. Someone in your family or friends know a lawyer. Making a will does not need a top notch expert lawyer.
