Great thread .... would love to share some thoughts here

apart from the names already mentioned earlier on this thread there are also some unsung heroes

Srinivasa Ramanujan ( he had no formal education or means of livelihood and died at the age of 33 ) yet his work on pure mathematics on scraps of paper is a subject of research world over.

Aryabhatt - born near 500AD in bihar he was the first to give the value of pi...and wrote a major book on his work at the age of 23.

in the near modern times Prof V Kurien , his vision single handedly changed india from milk importing nation to one of the largest producers of milk.

I happenned to read "ignited minds " by APJ Abdul Kalam ...i had respect for him before reading this book but after reading I realized he is probably one of the greatest visionaries modern day India has seen ...He talks of his vision of his vision of how india is destined to become the foremost world leader in everyfield ....after reading it i felt ever more proud to be an indian. A fantastic read...from one of the greatest sons of the soil.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to all indians ...and even canadians who are indian at heart.

The list of great indian philosophers can just go on and on .... getting to know the lives the details of every single one is an amazing experience in itself.

Men often become what they believe themselves to be . If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I aquire the ability to do it even if I did'nt have it in the beginning ----- Mahatma Gandhi ( Taken from chapter 2 of " Ignited minds"

Damm it... Shame on me Mishtar... :)
I forgot Dr. Kalam... Guess Indian youth have an icon that is really home grown !

BUt I disagree with you abt Aryabhatt and Ramanujam... They were astronomers/mathematicans and not philosophers... YOu can always question how I can question Ptolemy/Aristotle as philosophers.. Thats cos their views (esp Ptolemy) were adapted by the Catholic church

Kurien !.. :) Utterly Butterly Delicious... AMUL :D

Another thing which amazes me about Dr. Kalam is his political universality .... he is loved thoughout the political spectrum. and if any indian needs motivation in any of our pursuits ...we dont have to go any further than his lectures and books.

Regarding wether we can include Ramanujan, Aryabhat as philosophers ....they are probably among the greatest indian "philosophers", if we use the term "Philosophy" the way it really means. If these men were living in modern times and went thru formal education and research system ...wont they be having numerous PhDs? ( Doctors of philosophy)

In additions to the above big names i was surprised to find some canadians deeply involved in the teaching of Yogananda and Sri Aurobindo.
I am not their follower and know too little about them but it was interesting to note that there are so many indian philosophers who are popular even here.

I recomend the following works of/on Sri Aurobindo . As regards to LIFE DIVINE it will take some time to understand & contemplate .

The Life Divine (1949), The Synthesis of Yoga (1948), and Essays on the Gita (1921–28, repr. 1950).

S. Mitra, The Liberator Sri Aurobindo, India, and the World (1970); B. Bruteau, Worthy is the World (1971); K. Gandhi, ed., Contemporary Relevance of Sri Aurobindo (1973); R. A. McDermott, ed., The Essential Aurobindo (1973).
