Go for Dell. My last Dell laptop with 2GB RAM/100GB HDD that I bought in 2005 is still going strong (I changed the OS to Ubutu). I found it to be sturdier than HP. Just bought HP, and although it's cheaper than Dell for the same configuration (8GB RAM - expandible to 16, 500 HDD, Touch), I still found Dell to be better than the HP. For one, HP support is crappy with their Indian Tech. Support don't have much knowledge and issues tend to be outstanding for months. So far I am disappointed with the support. Dell was always topnotch, on the other hand.
If your budget is tight, see if you could get a second hand from Craigslist. But, I would recommend you to buy new. Won't go wrong.
As TK also mentioned, if you could wait for a month (boxing day), the deals will be aplenty. You should be able to find a brand new Laptop (4GB RAM), 500GB HDD) for less than $500. See if you could find a laptop with expandable RAM, where you will have the ability to increase it to 8GB few years down the line, in case the performance starts degrading.
Keep an eye.
Agree with febpreet. Had to deal with HP support and had to send the computer back to them. Had horrible experience. Their support had no clue when will the computer be fixed and it took about couple months and some nasty calls and online chat with them to get a replacement. So forget HP, go for Dell.
You will get good deals on boxing day or black friday sales.
Alternatively go to FS or Best buy and ask for clearance items. They heavily discount those.
I have has 2 HP and had issues with both. I wont touch a HP again.
A DELL worked well.
I also have an ACER which I got from Walmart 4 years ago and is working well for me.
AUTOCAD will hog resources and would need a robust specification so buy the best you can afford.
I saw a off lease HP core i5 , 4GB , 250GB 14.1" elite notebook @ Tiger Direct ad for $300/- today..
Looks like a good deal ... Perhaps because of Black Friday tomorrow.
