hello all,
my parents became permanent residents under family class in 2017.
they live with me.
my question is when I file my taxes for 2017 (in March/April of this year), do I have to show or claim anything?
there is a section in Turbo Tax where it asks who all live in the same residence address - should I declare that they live here?
does that entitle me to any tax credits or deductions?
I know i am not eligible for the new caregiver credit since neither of them is infirm, but is there any other deduction or credit I can claim?
thank you in advance for any advice.
I was getting ready to file and prepare for the Income Tax Return, just like you and was exploring all of the Tax softwares on the market. Here are a few extracts on two of them and what they say about the point that you have raised here.
It is Interesting.
Read it for yourself and find out how you can avail the same in your tax return.
FH.

however I am even more confused now...according to these articles, I should be able to claim the caregiver amount for my parents, based on the following statement in the Turbo Tax article:
To qualify for the Caregiver Amount, the dependant must:
- be 18 years or older
- have had a net income of less than $20,607 in 2016
- be dependent on you because of a physical or mental impairment, or is your or your spouse’s parent or grandparent, born prior to 1951
based on the statement in bold, I should get the Caregiver amount.
however, it seems this credit was dissolved in 2017 and is now replaced with the CCA.
here is a link to the new CCA:

according to question 5, I won't get the caregiver amount.
but neither the Turbo Tax nor the H&R block articles reflect this.
am I mixing up all these credits and interpreting this wrong?
any ideas?
Canada Revenue Agency has their own web link with an explanation and I want to point this out to you that they are the FINAL Authority in its determination and its finality. So. always head to their publications to see EXACTLY what they say. That way we get the decision Right from the Horse's Mouth.
Hope this link will set the record straight.

In short when they started to allow the re-unification of the FAMILIES, they provided all of the Universal Benefits to the extended family. BUT, there is always a BUTT.... They left the burden of support to themselves and did not permit any additional deductions in supporting them. That is where the employing them as child support worker was suggested in some of the tax software. That is my two bits. fh
