Lithuanian cavers lost in world's deepest cave

Riga, Aug 4 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Communications have been lost with a party of Lithuanian cave specialists exploring the deepest cave in the world, Krubera-Voronja in Abkhazia, a spokeswoman for the expedition told Lithuanian media Friday.

The cavers were located more than 1,200 meters underground when communications were lost.

"It's not a very pleasant situation because we have had no idea since yesterday what is going on down there," the spokeswoman said.

"They are all at a depth of over 1,200 meters," she said, adding that there was no information concerning the condition of the cavers. She did not specify how many cavers were in the party.

Krubera-Voronja, located in the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia, was discovered in 1960. Only a few dozen cave specialists have ever penetrated to the cave's deepest level, fully 2,190 meters below the surface.
