34 killed, 85 injured in Iraq violence








Baghdad, Sep 30 (IANS) At least 34 people were killed and 85 injured in a wave of gunfire and bomb attacks, including 12 car bombs, across Iraqi cities and towns Sunday.

Of these, 25 people were killed and 59 others suffered injuries in eight car bomb explosions and gunfire attacks that occurred in and near the capital city of Baghdad, reported Xinhua citing police reports.

One of the deadliest attacks occurred in Taji area, 20 km from Baghdad, when insurgents successively blew up four car bombs in separate locations in the area, killing a total of eight people and wounding 25 others.

In Karrada district, two policemen, including an officer, were killed and five injured after a car bomb went off near a police patrol.

Three more car bombs, roadside bombs and gunfire attacks in Baghdad killed at least 15 people and wounded 29 others.

A suicide car bomber struck a police checkpoint in Kut city, 160 km from Baghdad, killing five policemen, including two officers, and wounding six others.

In Diyala province, a car bomb detonated at a marketplace in Khan Bani Saad town, some 30 km from Baghdad, killing a civilian and wounding five others.

A roadside bomb went off near an army patrol in Adheim city, some 120 km from Baghdad, killing a soldier and wounding four others.

Also in Diyala province, a car bomb explosion narrowly missed the convoy of Mohammed Jawad al-Timimi, chief of the Kiyala's traffic police directorate. He escaped the blast unharmed but four others injured.

In Iraq's Nineveh, a civilian was killed and six were injured when a car bomb exploded near an army checkpoint in eastern the provincial capital city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, a police explosives expert was killed in the morning while trying to defuse a booby-trapped car in Sulaimn Pek city, some 160 km from Baghdad.
