Suspended INLD lawmakers hold 'parallel' session

Chandigarh, Aug 24 (IANS) Having been suspended from the Haryana assembly a day earlier, legislators from the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Shiromani Akali Dal Wednesday held a 'parallel' session outside the assembly complex here.

All the 30 legislators of the INLD and one from the Akali Dal, all of whom were suspended for the remainder of the session by Speaker Kuldeep Sharma Tuesday for protesting inside the house, participated in the 'parallel' session.

INLD chief and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, who is the leader of opposition in the assembly, was among those lawmakers who participated in the 'parallel' session.

The state assembly continued its session inside the assembly complex even as the INLD held the 'parallel' session outside.

The suspended legislators elected former minister Mohammed Illyas Khan as the speaker for a day and later unanimously passed a resolution supporting the Jan Lokpal bill draft prepared by social activist and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare.

The resolution demanded that the central government should immediately table the Jan Lokpal bill draft in parliament so that a strong anti-corruption law could be made in the country.

The INLD's session also accused the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in the state of blatantly favouring builders and land mafia by amending the Haryana Land Ceiling Act.

The session rejected the amendment made by the Haryana government in the state assembly Wednesday saying that this was done retrospectively to help land mafia and big builders and companies.
