Guatemala deports McAfee to US

Guatemala City, Dec 13 (IANS/EFE) US software guru John McAfee, who fled here last week from neighbouring Belize where authorities want to question him about a murder, was deported to the US Wednesday, a Guatemalan official said.

The millionaire creator of the anti-virus software programme that bears his name left Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport at 3.35 p.m. on a commercial flight bound for Miami, immigration spokesman Fernando Lucero confirmed.

McAfee slipped into Guatemala last week and requested asylum, alleging persecution by the "very corrupt" Belize government.

The mogul, who has lived in Belize since 2008, said soldiers had been sent to harass him after he stopped making donations to Belizean politicians.

The eccentric millionaire surfaced in Guatemala after spending several weeks in hiding to elude Belize authorities, who want to question him about the Nov 10 murder of fellow American expat Gregory Faull, his neighbour on the island of Ambergris Caye.

Having rejected McAfee's asylum application, Guatemala was on the verge of sending him back to Belize last Thursday when the 67-year-old complained of chest pain and was taken to a police hospital in the capital for tests.

McAfee ultimately decided to accept deportation to the US, which he views as "safer" than Belize, defense attorney Telesforo Guerra told reporters here Wednesday.
