If you were born in India and took citizenship, you do NOT automatically become eligible for Dual citizenship. Each Request for Indian Citizenship is granted on a "CASE BY CASE " basis. In other words, you will need to surrender your Indian Passport when you get Canadian Citizenship. You will then have to apply for Indian citizenship.    Is Surrender Certificate needed or just Cancellation stamp ?: ...get my Indian passport duly cancelled ( stamped cancelled ) by paying the $ 20 miscellaneous fee ( not $ 168 ) without getting a surender certificate ? The website just says that you need not pay the $ 168 renunciation fee if you got citizenship before May 31 , 2010 ..doesn't say anything about if you still need a surrender certificate or not . It does say that you still have to get your Indian passport stamped cancelled ( expired or not ) Do they ( VFS ) just stamp the Indian passport cancelled & give it back to you over the counter ..or do they actually physically send the passport to the consulate to get it cancelled .
