My daughter has applied for PR status for my wife and me to settle in Canada. I am a pensioner residing in Mumbai. My queries are:

1. What sort of insurance benefits would we get as permanent residents? Would insurance cover the cost of our usual medicines?
2. How do I repatriate my pension money to Canada?
3. I am an income tax payer in India. Should I continue to maintain bank accounts here and pay income tax?

Thank you,

1. Assuming you are over 65, your drugs cost will be covered OHIP. Health benefits are free for everyone. Your daughter should know the answer.
2. Check with your banker. As this is good money, they can advise you how to do it. Opening a SBI bank account will good start as you can transfer money from India to SBI branch in Canada very easily. Check the process with the bank.
3. Yes you can. Until you become a citizen, you will remain a citizen of India though non-resident. Is your pension income taxable.?

When did you apply for PR. It takes 4-5 years from sponsor application to get a PR.

Thank you for your response. It was most helpful. My wife and I are both over 65. My daughter and her family have supplementary insurance over and above the OHIP. This helps cover the cost of medicines. We did not know that senior citizens receive free cost of medicines in Ontario. Does this mean that blood pressure and such medicines would be covered? Would we still require additional insurance for dental and eye care.

Please do not cut off your ties to India.

In my personal experience 2 out of 3 senior citizen retirees who immigrate to Canada tend to go back to India after the initial honey moon period.

The following are the reasons:

1.The social network you have back home cannot be obtained here.

2.You are too dependant on your children even for basic movement here, while you can be independant there.

3.The properties you hold there cannot be obtained again in India as they are too valuable and appreciating too fast.

4.The winters of about 4 to 5 months are too hard on older people. How many days can you sit inside your living rooms and watch snow pour outside.

5.The type of goodwill, nearness, festivity that you obtain in Mumbai can NEVER be obtained anywhere in the world. The same dirty place you see now will look like heaven after 6 months in Canada. The Holi festival, Govinda-Ganapati festival, Navratri Garba or Diwali can NOT be celeberated anywhere in the world.

6.The nimbu paani or the batata wada you get in railway station canteen for a rew rupees CAN never be obtained in CANADA.

In my experience 2 out of 3 senior citizens return home in the first year. The balance senior citizens would like to return but are not in a physical or financial position to do so.

Please do not cut off your links to Mumbai. Please visit here do all the initial run around of going to Niagara falls, CN tower, Ottawa, Montreal and all the initial honey moon stuff. What do you after that?.

My 2 Naya Paisa(s).
