Tripoli, March 18 (IANS) Tripoli will ask Mauritania to extradite Libya's former intelligence chief arrested in the capital city of Nouakchott, an official said. The Libyan official stated it Saturday after the arrest of former intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, was confirmed by Mauritania's foreign ministry, Xinhua reported. The 63-year-old is described as one of Gaddafi's closest aides and a hardliner. He fled Libya after Gaddafi was deposed and then killed in an uprising last year. According to Mauritanian security officials, Al-Senussi who is also Gaddafi's brother-in-law, was detained at Nouakchott airport as he arrived from the Moroccan city of Casablanca on a false Malian passport. Al-Senussi, together with Gaddafi who ruled the country for four decades, was allegedly held responsible for the notorious massacre in Libya's Abu Salim prison in 1996 when over 1,000 prisoners were killed. On June 27, 2011, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued warrants against Gaddafi, his son Saif Islam and Al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity in cracking down on anti- Gaddafi protests. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has indicted Senussi on two counts of crimes against humanity.
