I haven't moved in to canada yet, but will soon in the mid of this year. I am a graphics designer and a video editor by profession. I have two sons aged 12 & 10yrs. resp. I am moving with my family. The thing which is worrying me the most is about my wife, who is not so well educated. She is not at all good at english. I know I will have a tough time there, but she has started learning English. Now can you please give me a brief idea about how this is going to affect our life there? Is there anything she can do while she learns English. By the way she is a very good cook and she has a pleasing and friendly personality. She is smart in every other way except for the language. Can you please suggest some ways that she can give a helping hand in household expenses? Can she do babysitting? Are there chances of providing breakfast/lunch/dinner on a monthly paid basis to bachelors/students/etc.? What other ways can you suggest? Your valuable experiences and suggestions will be very helpful and appreciated. I hope to recieve some positive responses.
God Bless.

DONT WORRY. if you panic so will she. which city are you moving too? if there is a big indian popupation. then she could do a number of jobs like make meals for ppl who are working. i know a lot of women who cook at home and their clients pic the food up in the evenings. or baby sit indian kids at her own home. she might need a CPR course for that which are available at a lot of community places. she can take english clases in tthe evening. a lot of communities give that so thatimmigrants can integrate in the community. once you come here you will find a lot of oppertunities but that dependds on how enteprising uyou are. she should at least learn to drive so she is mobile. if one is mobile here that is more helpful.
take care and best of luck

Dear Janmeja, Thank you so much for boosting up the spirits. I am not panic but a bit worried, but I don't let her(my wife) know about my worries. I too keep inspiring her to learn English ASAP. By the way your name seems like Gujrati, are you Gujrati? We too are Gujratis, We stay at Dahanu(near Mumbai). What do you do? Please respond. Thanks once again.

Don't worry man..
in fact she being non-professional might be her biggest asset. For one , she won't have hangups with small jobs, manial labor etc.. and that means she will be happier to get anything.. and small jobs are aplenty..
Secondly.. you are guju.. there's plenty of social support for guju and punjabi communities.. You will find someone for sure..
Why are you moving though.. Canada isn't what it used to be.. and taxes are higher and you don't get much of anything for your taxes.. I just read another post.. someone was leaving Canada for..Pakistan.. So see.. if ppl think life is better in Pakistan than Canada.. there's no hope .. is there?

Can you clarify your statement? What was Canada earlier? What taxes are higher? Income taxes? Are they higher than before (I dont think so).. property taxes..well yes..depnds where in the country you live.

check this link for where tax dollars are spent:
http://www.fin.gc.ca/taxdollar/where_e.html

1) Interest payments (on federal debt)
2) Transfer payments (to provinces/municipalities, OAP, EI etc)
3) Other Program expenses (direct costs of running federal departments ie/ defence, public security, Canada revenue agency)

You can also get reports on this site regarding public spending, accounts etc.
4) Budgetary spending (ie/ paying down federal debt)

Provinces pay for:

protection of personal and public property
health
social services
education
debts

Health care is cheaper and in some provinces you dont pay monthly premiums. University tuition is much lower than the USA, because government subsidizes a large portion of the costs.and the amount that you do pay you can claim on your income tax.

I guess it depends who you talk with. You can find all the negatives of Canada if you choose..and vice versa.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR WIFE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE LIKE HER HERE. SHE WILL BE ABLE TO FIND A JOB IMMEDIATELY AT $8 PER HOUR AND SHE WOULD NOT COMPLAIN. SHE WILL FIND HERSELF AT HOME, WHEN SHE FINDS MANY LIKE HERE AT HER WORK PLACE.

THE THING WHICH WORRIES ME MOST IS YOU. BASED ON YOUR BACK GROUND, I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD DO HERE?.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT HER, SHE WOULD SETTLE DOWN NICE HERE. CANADA REALLY WANTS PHYSICAL LABORERS. IF YOUR WIFE IS WILLING TO DO PACKING, CLEANING, STICKING LABELS SHE WILL FIND ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES IN MISSISSAUGA.

I ONCE AGAIN WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE MY QUESTION, WHAT IS THAT YOU WOULD BE DOING HERE? HAVE YOU DONE ANY BACKGROUND WORK ON THE EMPLOYMENT POTENTIAL FOR YOUR SKILLS IN CANADA?

PLEASE DO THAT FIRST.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

We can all talk and debate.. but ppl always have voted with their feet whenever they can..
All the cream of Canada is flowing down south to USA be it in medical/science or engg fields..
All the third worlders coming to Canada in search of better life are getting disappointed.. Like I said.. I was shocked to learn myself that someone chose pakistan of all the places over Canada.. whats next.. Somali refugees leaving Canada for better options in sub-saharan africa??!!!
It isn't pretty .. and proof is in dejected and sad desi faces you see in malls.. double income families are having hard times saving up for decent house... neighbourhoods are becoming more and more sub-standard... Standard of living is falling compared to USA.. job market will never be hot again due to endless supply of cheap 3rd world unskilled refugees..
Professional jobs are becoming scarce.. It isn't negative thinking.. these are macro-economic facts.. Why do you think people cling to govt. sponsored social services here?? and why do you think Albartans want less govt and more privatization..? dynamic and booming economies are more confident.. Eastern canada has lost that dynamism due to uncontrolled immigration of sub-standard and unrequired skilled and unskilled labor, heavy govt. taxes and massive healthcare crisis..
