I've lived in the USA for a along time and will be moving to Canada soon - are the duties on items we bring into Canada at customs (that are not on the goods to follow list) that bad?
if i wanted to buy a big screen TV, for example, is it worth it to buy it from the USA and include it in the goods to follow list to avoid the duties - or should i just buy it from Canada. is it worth it to buy the TV from the USA before landing?

things can be expensive here. specially cars. the biggest mistake we did was not to bring our cars with us. get what ever you can coz you will pay no duty. just use a good moooving company. mayflower is a good one. they are not expensive/
Unlike the rest of the household goods, cars cannot be "brought" into Canada. It's got to be imported through a procedure listed in http://www.riv.ca." rel="nofollow">LINK
I believe, they still require you to hold ownership of the car title before importing. That means, you cannot import leased or cars with outstanding loans.
Again, for full official info, check riv.ca.

THAT IS NOT CORRECT. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO JUST IMMIGRATED FROM VERMONT AND BROUGHT HIS CAMARY. ALL YLU NEED TO DO IS OWN THE CAR AND INFORM THE CUSTOMS ON THE US SIDE 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE LANDING INFORMING THEM THAT YOU WILL BE BRINGING YOUR CAR.
