I've lived in the USA for a along time and will be moving to Canada soon - are the duties on items we bring into Canada at customs (that are not on the goods to follow list) that bad?

if i wanted to buy a big screen TV, for example, is it worth it to buy it from the USA and include it in the goods to follow list to avoid the duties - or should i just buy it from Canada. is it worth it to buy the TV from the USA before landing?

Why won't you include all your stuff in the GTF list?
That's the best way....

Depends on how big, and how you plan to bring it.
If you need to get it transported via a shipping/moving company, then the transportation cost would probably offset any potential price differential.
OTOH, if you are moving it yourself, it may be worthwhile to comparison shop.
Don't assume that it will be cheaper in the US, or in Canada - comparison shop.
As a side note, the days for great deals are over in both the US and Canada (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Boxing Day, etc.).
There's no major sale time coming in the next few months on either side of the border.

If you plan to bring it from the US, check the warranty conditions. You warranty may not be valid in Canada.

things can be expensive here. specially cars. the biggest mistake we did was not to bring our cars with us. get what ever you can coz you will pay no duty. just use a good moooving company. mayflower is a good one. they are not expensive/

Unlike the rest of the household goods, cars cannot be "brought" into Canada. It's got to be imported through a procedure listed in http://www.riv.ca." rel="nofollow">LINK

I believe, they still require you to hold ownership of the car title before importing. That means, you cannot import leased or cars with outstanding loans.

Again, for full official info, check riv.ca.

THAT IS NOT CORRECT. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO JUST IMMIGRATED FROM VERMONT AND BROUGHT HIS CAMARY. ALL YLU NEED TO DO IS OWN THE CAR AND INFORM THE CUSTOMS ON THE US SIDE 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE LANDING INFORMING THEM THAT YOU WILL BE BRINGING YOUR CAR.

Unless you really meant to yell at me, I can still read lower case letters.

Here is a link on riv - http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html

Without importing your car, you cannot register your vehicle in Canada for the first time. Importing means getting the car into Canada from another country. You have to notify the US customs that you are EXPORTING the car from the US so that they can clear you.

However, you still have to import per RIV procedures if you want to register in Canada. For importation, you have 45 or 60 days (I don't remember now) before which you need to complete the required modifications (daytime running lights, some car seat latches, and stuff) and complete the RIV procedure so that the vehicle can be registered.

Of course, you can drive the vehicle with US plates, in theory, forever in Canada without registering in Canada and hence you need not import, but just bring the car. But what that does during plate renewal or border crossing into US or if you get pulled over, etc, can't say.

Also, let me say another thing. You need not begin the importation process the day you land. For example, I drove my car across, declared my good to follow list and then specifically mentioned that I was not interested in starting the importation procedure on that day. They let me into Canada and I drove around for the next 4 months and crossed the border into US several times without any issue. Eventually, I started the importation process, and registered the vehicle.
