Dear Friends,
My baby is born in Canada this year. I still need to apply for her Canadian passport.
I and my wife are Indian citizens and live in Canada on PR status. We intend to go back for ever sometime to India and would prefer to have out baby be India citizen as well. Te reason for her being indian citizen is so that she will not be considered as NRI in india and her school fees would be normal.
What is the best thing to do right now, canse we would be in canada for few more years. Shall I apply for he Canadian passport? If i do, what to do when she goes to india?
Please provide me your experience/ guidance with a proper reference links/documents. I appreciate all of your time and sincerely look forward to your reply (Email me at ftbps @ yahoo.com)
Regards,
Bipin

Your child will lose Cdn citizenship if you acquire Indian citizenship for the child. In other words, India does not allow dual citizenship. Also, I am not sure if Canada would let the child back into Canada on an Indian passport since Canada may insist the child IS a Cdn by birth and may not issue a Cdn visa on an Indian passport. At least US treats US born this way.
In other words, I've heard cases where US born will not be issued a visa to enter US (if a visa is required based on the other nationality) and will only be issued a US passport.
However, the child can become an OCI or a PIO. You can look up on the Indian embassy websites for more info.

Your child is canadian citizen. Passport is considered to be only travel document and not proof of citizenship as far as Canada is concerned. Your child will require the Canadian passport and Indian visa/OCI or PIO card to go to India.
You can apply for OCI card for the child and child can then apply for Indian citizenship after fullfilling the criteria (staying 1 year in India out of 5 years of holding OCI). For children, if you get PIO card and then apply for OCI you can save some money in fees.

RAJ-------Can the child hold two passports in that case ---I mean after five years when he applies for indian passport---does the child need to surrender the canadian passport ?
When you apply for getting Indian citizenship, you give up your Canadian citizenship. It is in form IIIC application for Indian citizenship on mha.nic.in
