One of my suggestions for the past year is a bit radical but one which could immediately remove some of the hidden barriers to employment.

The Govt gives incentives to several socially disadvantaged groups or groups that need a 'leg up'. e.g. First Nations, handicapped, pregnant women, youth etc. In the same vein, they should extend assistance to the generations of taxpayers that immigrants bring by giving concessions to the private sector as an incentive. Companies that provide an immigrant their first job in their designated field would get some tax concessions. I put this forward to the Parliamentary committee on Citizenship in '05 also. Last year Diane Ablonzky from AB (Conservative) picked this up but dropped it as fast!

I am so happy that you are getting involved in this advocacy - do email me - we will definitely do an interview.

Nick

I imagine you are Nick Nourani. I am going to transgress here and congratulate you for your launch of The Canadian Immigrant in TO in March.

I found yur editorial on Credentials recognition in the April issue of the utmost interest and dug your apt use of 'Duh'. Speaking from memory, I believe you said you had never met a PhD (or was it doctor?) driving a cab but you are sure they are out there. Believe you me, not only are Phds and doctors out there driving cabs but so are lawyers and judges.
Anyway, I am glad there are guys like you out there championing the foreign credentials cause not only among the Desi community but also among the rest of the immigrant community. Who else but a guy from the microsom of Mumbai could do that. Extend your Indian cosmopolitan background to embrace that of the global cosmopolitan here in Canada.

Keep up the good work!

Yeah do interview Chandresh and perhaps put his perspective in your May issue, that would be dynamite, along with a foto and short bio.
What say Chandresh?

Sure. I would be interested in writing columns for your periodical.

I am a freelancer and currently write for weeklies and monthlies. I cannot commit to writing for a daily unless it's an exercise. I once did a 2 page article for a well-known daily in TO on professionals driving cabs. It was an exercise for 2 weeks where I had to go around and interview all the taxi-wallahs and then do a write-up on my findings. It was very well received.

What kind of articles , columns are you looking for? Last week I covered the Indian High Commisioner's meeting with the Lieutenant Governor Bartleman here in TO. Bartleman is all over the news now because of the info he has given the media on the AIR India bombing.
Last week,I also covered the launch of the new exciting apparel line named 'Fusia' from Alia Khan which is to be carried by The Bay.
I also covered the musical band 'Tandava' from BC last week.
In the past I have covered bands like The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd), Eric Clapton, Shakira and this year, plentiful Juno award winner, Nelly Furtado. All for a well-known mainstream newspaper in TO.
Next week I am to write on South Asian children from grade to high school manifesting their creativity in the sciences and arts. Also on many of the Small World musical festivities happening in TO and other events in this great month long celebration of South Asian culture taking place in various spots in the mighty TO.

In other words, I am pretty versatile.

Please send me your email and phone vide pm and I can send you samples of my work which are still on the web. I can also mail you hard copies of my work to your regular Canada Post address.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Investpro.

Public Policy Forum- Ottawa's conference that examined ways of utilizing the skills and credentials of foreign-trained workers, and has since published an Outcomes Report on the results. The conference was held in Regina, and featured speakers representing immigrant services organizations, provincial and federal governments, and educational institutions.
Please click http://www.ppforum.ca/common/assets/publications/en/fcr_outcomes_report-2.pdf for detailed report.

Regards,
kisi

Chandresh,

Keep us informed about the seminar !!

All I can say for Engineers is that it is not PEO which is creating problem. Infact I found them pretty good and well organised.

Problem with engineers driving cab is because perhaps they do not have skill sets ( incl soft skill) to compete in their own field. They also take easy way out....as a cab driver you earn $60 K to $100 K....without any tension....guess if you were a Project Manager handliing budget of $10 M.

Also immigration people should limit number of engineers coming to Canada. Fact is Ontario which is oversupplied with engineers is having manufacturing losses which only adds up to the problem.

Oversupply of engineers also mean you are compromising on Quality !! I am not sure about other contries but as you may know their is huge difference between engineering colleges in India. The year I graduated, Punjab had 5 engineerng colleges ( all Govt). Now their are almost 50 colleges...........all private...........and you can check for the quality for urself !!

I would like CIC to have PEO or CCPE involved in evaluation when considering for immigration. This process will helpp all prospective engineers and help them transition in much easier way !!
