Some one sent to me this question answers session on Heart Health with Dr.Devi Shetty, Narayana Hridayalaya (Heart Specialist) Bangalore, which I am pasting here for the benefit of every one. Some of the answers may not apply to Canadians as this chat was for Indians.

Qn: What are the five thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?
Ans: 1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil 2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime 3. Quit smoking 4. Control weight 5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
Ans: No

Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?
Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints.

Ans: Mother Theresa, who was my patient.

Ans: Extremely rare

Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Ans : No.

I do not know if this is a real transcript since this is a forwarded email but here is what American Heart Association has to say. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4632

Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease. We recommend eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week.

I missed that one...you are right. Omega 3 is oft mentioned as a preventive measure for cardiovascular diesease.

You can get this from flax seeds too...however the jury is still out on longterm effects for men
http://www.healthcastle.com/omega3.shtml

Also the statement 'Walking is better than Jogging' leaves me a bit confounded as it is a generalisation. Walking around the block a cpl of times is a good start for a 400 pounder but not as effective for a 200 pounder. If 'walking' was substituted by 'brisk walking' it would be more applicable to the average person...assuming thats the target reader for this opinion piece.

Then theres the time issue. But this link covers most of it.
