mercury6:

From the link you posted,

"The consequent changes in the Citizenship Rules 1956 have to be specified by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The amended Rules can come into force only after they are tabled in Parliament which is expected to meet on 2nd June 2004. The Ministry of Home Affairs would issue instructions to all concerned authorities only after the Rules come into force. "

How does the rules apply to someone like me who is about to take the oath? I am told by the embassy here that I need to surrender my Indian passport only when I get the canadian passport OR I can get the PIO card only after getting Canadian passport.

After I saw the info on the link, I am still unable to figure out.

I don't see why you would be required to surrender your Indian passport to the Canadian authorities. Canada allows for dual citizenship and so has no need for you to surrender your citizenship of another country. What they do take away is your "Landed Immigrant Paper" that form IMM... whatever. You can continue to hold your Indian passport until its expiry, by which time I am sure the Ministry of Home Affairs would have formulated the rules and procedures.

wisernow,

I have to surrender the Indian passport to the Indian embsassy since I cant keep both of them. When the dual citizenship comes into picture (whenver it is), then I have to reapply for the India passport. This is what I understand from the embassy.

Maybe I got you wrong. Was this told to you by the Canadian embassy or the Indian embassy?

Again, which embassy?
Presuming it is the Indian embassy, and that you are a stickler for rules and want to go by the book, what is the harm in surrendering it, since all of us know that the dual citizenship rules etc will be coming out shortly, unless you have some compelling reasons that warrant use of the Indian passport before that happens. It's just a few months, a year at most before you can have your passport, or whatever document they come up with that certifies your Indian citizenship.

The info is from Indian embassy. My passport expires in 2007.
