Dear Seniors and friends,
I chanced upon this GREAT site while surfing the net for information regarding settling in Canada and came upon very detailed posts for people like me.
I had applied in 2000, completed medicals in July 2004 and have recently sent in the police clearances, visa fees along with the passports.
Awaiting visas and therefore clicking the keyboard.
Please allow me to say this that this is a great and well run site with the positive views as well as the sobering opinions of people who have had to take a longer stride to settle - i respect them all for taking time for sharing their experiences on this forum - which prepares one for the future ( definitely doesnt discourage people , yes may be it does for people who think that "foren" is a place where streets are paved with gold, badi gadi and airconditioning at home - well frankly i too had a fair smathering of this in me too !!) and even going to the extent of offering help to new immigrants upon landing - which i can say is our greatest concern.
I only hope that i get a chance to meet all you wonderful people.
getting back to the topic of my post , my three year old son's passport is valid till 2006. please advise whether it is possible to get it renewed there or should i apply in India for renewal ( which would be a problem as it is still valid).
Would be grateful for your advice(s). Looking forward to your replies.
Thanking you

sober,
when do you think your passports will be received ?
Do you intend on staying in Canada till 2006 ?
If yes, then its better you renew them here.
If not, and you have to return back to India, then you will have to renew them from INdia. Please be warned that your PR card will be valid as long as your Passport is valid
Best of luck

Dear Ottawa nerd
Thank you sir. That was very prompt.
We have sent in the passports a few days back, some people have received them back stamped in less than two months after sending their visa fees and medicals, though the CHC letter says it may take upto six months, so there you are.
yes we shall be staying on in Canada once we land there for whatever it is there for us, good or bad. Hope that it turns out to be worth it in the longer run if not for us then atleast for our son. Would you be aware of the formalities required for renewal there. May i ask another advice, which is a better place to land and get work - vancouver or Toronto ( Toronto ?).
The CD has a voluntary service for aiport and appartment search - is it on now.
Would it be possible to have emails addresses and telephone numbers of some members to contact for information before leaving this soil.
Thank you

Sober,
to answer your question, you have to make that choice. Are you assured of "guaranteed" employment or are you planning on investing money into some business ? If both these cases are not valid then you should land in some city (like Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon etc., ) that are cheap (cost wise). You will get "extra mileage" for your cash, by which time you can do a job search.
I dont stay in To or Vancouver. If you are a SIKH, then Vancouver will be better for you. There is a sizeable SIKH population in Vancouver and its surrounding areas. If you are a Gujju Bhai, then of cos GTA is the place for your. Afterall CD is run by our very own GG. This is to help you get a "homely" feeling.
As per your statements, it would be prudent on your part to renew ur son's pp in Canada. You can always post messages in the "Landing Soon" part of the forum. If someone is interested in taking care of yor accomodation etc., after you land, then I am sure they would volunteer or direct you to individuals who can help you. I would recommend get in touch with ppl as soon as you get your flight tickets. Your VISA should reach you within a month.
Good luck in your "journey"
