Just for the record... regarding sumjo's statement that it takes one and a half months to get a PCC in mumbai.....It takes just Two days without bribing any officials to get a police clearance certificate.. You have to go the Bengal Chemical Building Passport office at Worli along with an application form and the relevant fees...

Dear indione, SPV,

I am not talking about the PCC that is issued from the PP office.
For your information, I got my PCC from Calcutta RPO in one month, after due verification by the police. This was when I was applying for immigration to Canada. Again, after 4 years, after clearance of medicals and before issuance of visa by the CHC, they asked for a PCC from LOCAL THE POLICE STATION. Now, the local police station only does the verification; the certificate is issued from the police HQ in Crawford Mkt.
This is the current CHC rule.

Well, you get 24/7 power supply only in Mumbai AND nowhere else in India.

You seem to have never moved out of Mumbai perhaps. And India is not only Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

I was in my hometown in India this winter. No power cuts! I was in Jaipur for a week. No power cuts! I was in Bikaner and then in Jaisalmer. No power cuts!

So much for your theory that MUmbai is the only place with no power cuts!

Rest of the country is a mess

I do not understand why this thread is being used by some to vent their frustrations with India. The OP was only about what salary it would take to make one want to return to India.

When the income disparity between the classes have been reduced(for a cpl of generations) to the levels we see in North America. Then, I would probably move back.

How does reduction in the disparity between classes affect you? Does putting geographical distance between that disparity and yourself help you in any way?

Sipping martinis in an exclusive enclave while people live in plastic sheets , a stones throw away...<snip>
some(like me)
are more comfortable with the insulating effects of the oceans instead of gates, walls, barbed wire and tinted glass .

You mean you have “run away” because you couldn’t bear to sit and drink martini with poverty visible up close and your conscience made you feel bad about it. Now that you have the “oceans” between you and that very same poverty, your conscience feels better, eh?

Got offer from a bang lore firm for 13 lakh. Still I will not like to live in India. A healthy human development environment with abundance of gift from nature in terms of air , water & land is what life should be all about. You just cannot get that thing in India.

Really? Is there shortage of air in India? With Rs 1.1 lakh per month , you wouldn’t be able to manage clean drinking water for yourself? And, Rs 13 lakh per annum will is also not enough to get you a house to live in?

hi there,

Just curious, if you have visited other countries yourself, and actually worked there for longer time!

Regards.

Read the thread. Here's part of the explanation again:
Sipping martinis in an exclusive enclave while people live in plastic sheets , a stones throw away...is not exactly going to improve the 'standard of living' in any country. You are going to have to negotiate the same environment(dirt, pollution, crime, population, corruption etc),albeit for limited time, the have-nots have to deal with everyday.

Yep ;).Thats part of the answer. The rest is in the first part of this post.

I'll throw the question right back at you phrased in another ways.
Don't you have any conscience sipping martinis and wallowing in five star luxuries when you have to pass a homeless, naked 5 yr old begging on the road(daily) on the other side of the air conditioned glass?
How can you live like that(1.25 lacs/p.m) when there is such pressing misery right around you? As far as I can see you just need the 1.25 lacs/p.m. so that you dont have to live like those millions who barely manage a measely existence.
Or is that amount meant for distribution amongst the masses :)?

I need the distance to turn a blind eye, you need 1.25 lacs to do the same. According to me we are the same in this respect. Its our own backsides we are concerned with.

When was this thread about doing something to improve the 'standard of living' in any country? The OP was a simple question about what it would take that would make you want to go back to India.

"For a limited time"??
Nope! If I have enough money, I will not have to deal with dirt, pollution, crime, population, corruption etc. That is where money helps. Does Azim Premji or Kumarmangalam Birla have to deal with dirt, pollution, crime, population, corruption etc.?

No. Enjoying luxuries of any kind while I "have to pass a homeless, naked 5 yr old begging on the road" does NOT hurt my conscience? Not one bit! Why should it? It is not I who is responsible for the situation of someone else! Please do not confuse empathy with guilt! Yes, I do feel sorry for the poor and hungry, but on no account do I feel guilty. Why will I need to "run away" from anything?

I think I have already answered that. The two are not related in the least. "Pressing misery" exists in the world, regardless of where I live. Knowing it exists is all that matters! I will be a good human being and be empathetic and live with with the knowldge that exists, without any problems, regardless of whether I see example of it at close quarters or witness it in other ways.

My life has always been, and in all probability, will always remain better than "those millions who barely manage a measely existence" and so I do not need the 1.25 lacs/m to be better than them. I need the 1.25 lacs/m for myselfto live an enjoyable life in my home country, where I think I can have a much better life than is available to me here.

No. But I ould certainly do more for charity if I had that money.

No. I don't, and never will, turn a blind eye. How is it possible to turn a blind eye towards reality?
Living in Toronto if I, and I guess this applies to just about everyone, can watch on TV those programs that show children dying of starvattion and disease, and then go and have my dinner, I can as well do it in India too.

For those who do not even want to consider returning, regardless of anything else, well it is as if that they not only not love their motherland, they perhaps hate it with a passion.

Whoa! Just saw this.

Since we are being so judgemental...
What would you say about a first gen immigrant, who loves their mother land enough to go back...
BUT
only as long as they get 1.25 lacs? :D

I think the person is looking out for himself just as the person who does not want to go back. We are the same. Hey! I said that already. :D
