As much as I can say or know, Accoutants can get through with their field of occupation given their experience and qualification. Generally, you should be prepared to start at a lower position as Canadian employers try to look for people with Canadian work experience, so keeping this in mind try to venture out. Also adaptibility and age may also be other factors. My father's uncle immigrated into Canada in 1968 at the age of 40 and adapted so well, now, even at 80 he is a sought after CGA in Toronto with clients still willing to hire him. So its a question of willing to work hard and adapt more than anything else.

And may I ask what personal experiences, besides your uncles, has helped you make this opinion?

IMO, Accountants and Doctors are least successful professions here - and that I speak from my own experience of having met scores of accountants and lots of doctors in Canada. And DONT COMPARE with someone who migrated before 2000 - it was a different scenario then.

Everbody's experience vary. IMO, accountants and doctors who once met the certification/govt. requirements are typically very successful. CGA/CA/CPA are well in demand and good way to start your own accounting practice if you have the business mindset. Take lot of determination and focus.

Dont know about that...I got to Canada in 96 and It was pretty much the same in TO as I now read on CD. One of my friends(you have met him) who came a year before me tried to warn me. Another person, who I stayed with on arrival, came 4 yrs before(from his chauffered merc lifestyle in the ME) was working as a security guard. The staff in the futureshop warehouse(where I worked for a few months) was similarly filled with educated desis from the ME and India. Fortunately, afaik 70% of those have overcome their situations.

If there ever was a time it was 'easier', I guess it was much before.

You are right - experiences vary. However, being an accountant, I meet more of such persons in the same field and know quite a few who even after local designations are either fighting hard to keep their jobs, or are grossly under-employed. I am myself a CPA but this designation has been of no use in last 2 years. Local CA - definiely has advantage, but the system is such that it is almost impossible to become one if you want to - unless you passed your CPA BEFORE LANDING in Canada (such a silly rule - if you are CPA before landing, you have only one challange exam to take of local CA, if you become CPA after you land, you have to go thru it all - as if the CPA before and after landing is different!!!!)

Well for me it does make a difference. When I landed in 2000 Jan in Toronto, I had two job offers and one promise to be considered if I stayed in Toronto - all in 9 days of my stay here. When I finally started looking for jobs in Dec 2001 - well you know the story........Not a single job in 3 years!
