Tragedy hits family of ragging victim as mom dies of humiliation
Sunday September 10 2006 00:00 IST
SRIKAKULAM: Even as State Human Right Commission began its probe into the barbaric ragging incident at GMR IT College at Rajam, another tragedy hit the family of the ragging victim when his mother died at Salur on Saturday evening.
Doubts are being expressed over her death. Sources said that the victim Ch Muskesh's mother Lalitha hanged herself unable to bear the humiliation. However, police said that Lalitha, who was in a state of shock during the last three days died of massive heart attack.
Earlier in the day, SHRC secretary S Chellappa conducted an inquiry into the incident. He talked to the college management, witnesses, the victim and his father Ch Eswar Rao, a lab technician at Salur.
He recorded the statements of all concerned persons while expressing his displeasure over the college management's attempt to steer clear of the controversy on the ground that the ragging incident occurred outside the college campus. Chellappa inspected the room where the ragging incident occurred.
Mukhesh and his father feared threat to their lives from the accused and the Commission assured complete protection.
Later, speaking to mediapersons, Chellappa said that the \"disgraceful incident reflected the abnormal behaviour of the accused\". Assuring that the accused will be brought to book, he said that he would submit the report to the commission soon.
On the other hand, Mukesh is prepared to go to the college but his father is for sending his son to another college. But, on coming to know about the sudden death of Lalitha, they rushed to Salur.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
