I am an Indian Citizen, and have lived in various countries, I wanted information on the rules governing renewal of Indian passport in Canada.
In 2006, the Indian passport would expire, when we went up to renew the same for a further 10 yrs, we were refused, and it was only renewed for 2 years - simply covering the period of the Canadian Study Permit. Now, it expires in June 2008, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem.
As the Indian consulate informed us that they will only renew it for the period of the validity of the Canadian Study Permit. As it is by Canadian law, that they cannot renew the passport further than that period.
I have called the Indian Consulate in US, and they said there is no such ruling, I also talked to the Indian Consulate in UK, and they informed that the passport should have been renewed for the next 10 years.
Very distressed, and need help, as the holder of this passport has no intention of staying/living in Canada, and cannot travel, unless the passport is valid.
Please Help, any information will be appreciated.
Maybe u r doing something wrong...Once ur passport expires, u get a new passport..
Haven't heard of renewal for expired passports...
If u r under toronto consulate, go to http://www.cgitoronto.ca/ (www.cgitoronto.ca) and check under passport services..
Check under passport renewal..and it clearly states that
===========================================
Please note : If your current passport is expiring after its full validity of ten years, you do not apply for a renewal, but the issue of a New Passport ( see above for details including payment of full fee and submission of four photographs )
===========================================
More info can be found in that site...

PS: in case u dont come under toronto jurisdiction, pls check ur specific consulate website, but the rules will be same...

A similar thread http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=24013
I am posting it again here for prospective reader's benefit .
I have my PR valid till 2013 . Had applied for a new Passport upon the previous one's 10 year expiry . Against my expectation of the new passport's validity of 10 years , CGI has issued it for 1 year validity .
