Hello Group
I am taking my 74 yr old mother who is a resident of Canada to USA (Seattle) for 4 months. She has OHIP coverage and I am also planning to buy travel med insurance for her from Canada. She has type 2 diabetes which is under control on oral medication for the past 5 yrs. I would appreciate if any of you could answer the following for me.
1) God forbid my mom falls sick in Seattle, does OHIP cover anything at all or is it completely up to the private travel med insurance I am buying for her.
2) If I take her to Vancouver from Seattle for treatment, would the hospitals in Vancouver accept OHIP for emergency med care or do I have to pay from my pocket.
Thanks in advance for any help.

OHIP registration is valid for 6 months outside of Canada.
In USA, they will not accept your OHIP card nor will the Ontario Healthcare reimburse the cost.
If you take your Mom to BC for treatment, then based on any reciprocity arrangement that BC has with Ontario (Other seniors can advise on this), OHIP may reimburse the cost (To be confirmed by other CD's). However, you will pay from your own pocket , get the bill and then claim in ontario.
Visit OHIP site for more details.
Peace
