One of the fastest growing festivals of the GTA and the largest completely free mult-disciplinary arts festival of Western GTA will open its 2010 run with a visual arts show at the Living Arts Centre at 7:00 pm on July 8th.

Asma Arshad Mahmood, Chair of CCAI (non for profit organization that runs Mosaic) and the Festival Director said, “Visual arts have occupied a very important place in the programming for Mosaic Festival. Every year we strive to present better and unique art shows to showcase the contemporary artwork by South Asian artists from around the world and especially in Canada. Celebrating the fifth year, Mosaic Festival has relocated to Living Arts Centre due to the on going construction in the Civic Square, the home of Mosaic festival.

This year’s theme, Dislocation, explores the act of moving, migration, relocation from a historical or contemporary perspective and makes an effort to examine the change of identity of the object or subject, as we know it. Mississauga is a city of migrants and their desire to identify themselves in the Diaspora has created a fascination with cultural and religious practices. Exploration of Human displacement across state line and borders (physical and cultural), and what it entails in terms of space, time and sense of loss or discovery are the intriguing elements of this exhibition. Tourism is also suggested as a contemporary metaphor of this exploration.

The artists in "Dislocation" address the central themes of the exhibition in terms of their individual art practice. They all examine the peculiar transitional relationship between the immigrant, tenant, hotel guest, their destination and the encounters that take place. “

Dislocation jury included Kumkum Ramchandani, a Mississauga based visual artist of Indian origin, Saniya Khan an artist with a degree and distinction in Textile Design from the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan and Noni Kaur, Mississauga based artist with MFA degree from Curtin University of Technology, Australia.

Visual Artists whose work comprise the exhibition “Dislocation” are

Hayat Gul, Varughese Thomas USA, Tazeen Qayyum, Faisal Anwar,, Vishal Misra/ Anu Misra, Reeta Saeed, Debashis Sinha, Anandi Merhai, Amin ur Rehman from Canada and Sumaira Tazeen Pakistan,
