FILMI Toronto’s South Film Festival is proud to announce that it has entered
into a community screening partnership with D Films Corporation on its
eagerly anticipated release of WEST IS WEST, the sequel to the international
hit East is East. WEST IS WEST will open across Canada in all major cities on
March 25, 2011.
‘WEST IS WEST’, which has already become a box office hit in the UK by
securing the highest screen average in the UK during it’s opening weekend
when it opened in 184 locations across the country.
Director Andy De Emmony captures the spirit of young and old and the
convergence of east and west in this film about a fascinating and much loved
dysfunctional family. Reuniting most of the original cast, including the
inimitable OM PURI who reprises his role as the dominating patriarch Zahir
"George" Khan, and produced by the same creative team - the sequel takes
the Khan family on a journey from Salford, north of England to rural
Pakistan. From the same writer, Ayub Khan-Din, a British-Pakistani actor
and playwright, the loosely autobiographical story begins four years after the
first film.
Om Puri is one of India's most distinguished actors and a veteran of well over
100 films. He has been seen by international audiences in East Is East;
Richard Attenborough's Gandhi; My Son The Fanatic; Peter Cattaneo's The
Parole Officer; City Of Joy (opposite Patrick Swayze); Wolf (alongside Jack
Nicholson), The Ghost And The Darkness (opposite Val Kilmer) and Charlie
Wilson's War (starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts).
In 1999, FILMI Toronto’s South Film Festival was launched with the Canadian
premiere of the international hit East is East, starring Om Puri and Jimi
Mistry. Since its inception as a film festival at the Harbourfront Centre over a
decade ago, Filmi has built a strong presence in the community, thanks to its
exceptional line-up of films and its ever-growing number of supporters. Each
year, Filmi, with the support of its many generous sponsors, continues to
showcase a diverse slate of South Asian films from Canada and around the
world. Now, twelve years after presenting the Canadian premiere of East is
East, Filmi is very pleased to be a community screening partner for the
release of the highly awaited sequel to East is East - WEST IS WEST - and to
add D Films Corporation as a supporter of the Toronto South Asian Film
Festival.
D Films & Filmi are giving your supporters a chance to win advance-screening
passes through our online ticket giveaway!
