Friends,
Good discussion on this topic. To be honest we have some vague guidelines on signature as BL mentioned earlier. However we do not have any strong policy for it. And we need one.
Summary of the suggestions members made -
- Allow only members providing valuable advise in their field of expertise and business
- Charge people to put their signature
- Do not allow anyone advertising in signature
I personally would go for the first option, however would like to see opinion from members. To implement this option I can have a simple condition that displays signature only for poster having more than say 25 posts.
If we go for second options, it would filter out non-advertising members also, and to control that I have to manage all 45,000 users which would be little hard. Also those who are paying the fees will be tempted to post more, so that their ad will appear more even if their posts do not makes sense.
Your opinons?

Hi Garvo
Wat is wrong with signatures ?
R they disturbance for us ?
so what if having their signature they make business through Canadiendesi , in return those professionals are helping many other CD users with their valuable information for free...
After all, CD forum has created to help each other so why target those professional who are ready to help us with their professional advice FREE OR CHARGE...
Specially to those guys who are against signature : Why r u guys criticizing them ? why u guys need some help , u are the first persons to go and ask them and YET u guys have problem with them.... funny and ridicules -
We might hurt thier feeling by ask them to removing their signature and chances are they might not be so happy to help other CD's
PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE ----Gizzzzzzzz

Blue Peafowl - Where did you get the ridicules idea that 'those who criticize' take their guidance ... I don't remember contacting the realtors .... please correct your understanding .
Every one is giving free advice on CD s and every one s an expert in their own field ... Would you consider Sudesingh / Chandresh to be any less contributor / professional... Heck CD is meant for free advice sharing so whats the big deal ....... Or would these esteemed members go away ... just because they are not getting to advertise ... in which case they perhaps should not be there in the first place ...
Where s the question of hurting their feelings when they are potentially using the board to make money ..... I think it would be a step towards preventing the forum from being commercially exploited ...
I have recently read a good 24 pages of the Real Estate forum and have observed that quite a few of the posts are selective as far as help is concerned , plus they are promoting real estate sale every now and then ... by springing new statistics every time .... this appears to be hidden propoganda .......
To GG - Thanks for responding ....... I don't have anything personal against any member . It was just that I felt that the forum policy of ' no advertising on charcha ' was possibly getting compromised that I brough this issue up .... Since quite a few members are indifferent / neutral to this .... it is ultimately to you to dispose ... It will be good to have a policy ..
Whats wrong with the 3rd option by the way ..... that way there would be no scope for interpretations ....

Fido.
Things may not always be that clear Fido. Here is my example;
1. I contacted one of the folks who put their signatures up, got a personal response to my query and that was it. Helpful and no follow up, query or suggestion of business interest subsequently.
2. I contacted one of the more prolific and decidedly knowledgeable contributors for advice too. I got the advice I needed, and withing 48 hours I also got a contact from an individual in this contributor's office soliciting business. Coincidence?
I think a lot of folks find this forum very helpful. We have to create a positive space for good people to come and contribute.
In my view, it is upto each member to deal with and respond to communication. We are all adults I would like to believe.
Solicitation may be both overt and covert. Let us not put too many restrictions, but have monitoring as is being done.
My 2 cents.

Where did u get the idea that i m only referring to "REALTORS"...
i meant for all professionals( NOT EVERYONE GIVES FREE ADVICE ) BUT U GET FREE ADVICE ON THIS FORUM FROM DIFFERENT PROFESSIONALS (Realtor, immigration, it professional, lawyers and list goes on and on....)
and one more thing .. r u sure ? u didn't get any help from Realtor forum ? i doubt it...
sometime other ask the questions and we get the answer indirectly... so don't say u never know calling any Realtor ...
note: Again, i have nothing personal against u and i m not targeting only u... there is also other ppl who has oppose signature so dont take it personal..

Osh Gosh ... My Gosh
Talking of trolls and double standards .... here we have our member Blue Peafowl posting under 2 different ids as further proved by the following thread link ............ I hope members should respect CD rules !!
And for 2 ... the same person who is supporting 'advertised signatures ' is found denouncing some one else who has recommended a good experience with a realtor and advising the person to go to the Advertising section .... Read for yourself this following thread .... http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=24645
Makes me wonder a lot of things but I will leave them out for now ....
