Hello all

I made a credit card purchase from Loblaws on Dec 6 2006. It's a month now and they haven't yet processed that payment. Normally, credit card payments are processed within 3-5 days. So, what do I do here?

I don't want them to spring that payment on me 3 months later! Should I contact my bank? Or should I contact Loblaws?

It's annoying that they are doing this. What if I want to cancel my card now? Or say my card expired this week. What would they do then?

Any help on this is hugely appreciated!

You may call your credit card issuer and find out if the transaction is showing as "pending". Normally, the transaction becomes pending soon after the charge was made and then gets posted in your account few days later after the card issuer authorises the charge.

If the credit card issuer does not see the pending transaction, then, maybe, you need to contact the vendor, Loblaws. Maybe, Loblaws "forgot" to actually charge your card. If the pending transaction is there, then you need to ask the credit card issuer to find out what the hold up is.

As long as the charge was made pending on your card, you will be responsible for the payment irrespective of whether the card expires or you cancel the card.

Today, it's Jan 12th and the money has not been taken from my credit card account. I called my bank and they said that, until Loblaws sent them that paper receipt that we sign, they won't take the money out of my account. So I went to Loblaws and they say that I need to contact my bank. It's crazy!

To test their billing delays, I bought something else from the same Loblaws store on Jan 10th and today, it got taken out of my credit card account - 2 days. My guess is that that Dec 6 receipt somehow got misplaced or lost or is sitting in some desk somewhere.

Okay, so basically I've got some stuff for free as of now and if they are so casual about it, I might as well forget about it. But, the problem does not end there really. What if, some store employee discovers this 6 months later and then decides to charge my credit card. What if that card is not valid then (expired) or what if I have cancelled that card or say I am not even in Canada. That'd probably create problems for me. I definitely want to avoid such issues.

So, can anyone tell me what I can do? It's only about 50 bucks but it's a pain in the ass for me right now. I am thinking of going to Loblaws tomorrow and try and talk to some manager, and get him/her to trace out what happened to this specific transaction.

Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

Check with the bank if there is a time limit within which Loblaws is expected to send them the signed receipt.

Cancelling a credit card does not mean that charges cannot be posted against it.
The CC issuing company does have the required data to process a charge.
They will simply mail you a bill at your last-known mailing address, and from that point on, guess what - it's your problem.
In due course, they will start charging interest and in due course, start reporting this account as delinquent to the credit bureaus.

It is quite common for some businesses (especially junk magazine subscriptions) to continue posting annual subscription charges to a CC A/C long after the person has cancelled the subscription and in some cases, closed the credit card A/C.

The only recourse you have in such cases is to dispute the charge, if it is invalid.

In your case, it is a valid charge and you are doing the right thing in pursuing Loblaws to ensure it gets posted.

If only more people were as conscientious as you....
