To enter right into downtown area of Detroit, you can use either the Tunnel (Windsor-Detroit Tunnel) or the Bridge (Ambassador Bridge) from Windsor.
As far as hassles go, there is none as long as there is nothing to hide while crossing. These are professional courteous not so friendly people who are there to do their jobs (both US and Canadian side).
You may also access metro Detroit area through Sarnia crossing (Blue Water Bridge).
To cross via Amb bridge - use 401 West all the way to Huron Church road.
To cross via tunnel - use 401 West, exit at Dougall and follow directions.
To cross via Sarnia - use 401 west, take 403 west to Sarnia and the bridge.
