Given that you dont get a job for 3 months how much money will I need to settle in Canada? I was thinking of bringing 25000$ CAD. Will this amount help set me up with a place to stay and provide for basic needs ?

No not enough - that money will be used up simply in buying a used Toyota Camry!

Car is one of the basic needs in Toronto!

??? Used Camry for $25000? Where do you live? :)

$25000 (25 thousand) is more than enough for basic needs. If you're coming in or close to the summer, you may not need a car right away, not many immigrants come and purchase a car right away anyways. Public transportation within the GTA is quite decent, especially in the summer since you don't have to wait in the cold.

Of course, it depends on what your lifestyle is, but if you cut corners intially, you can survive for about $1200 a month in decent living conditions. Say you go overboard and spend $5000 on the initial expenses (TV, VCR, BED, COUCH etc etc), you still have about 20 grand left. You can easily live for a year on this.

Of course, you don't want to burn through your saving so most likely you'll get a job that'll pay for the basics within the first three months anyways.

Even if you wanna buy car right away ... you still need a License to drive it. You can't buy that ( ... ok !!! I have heard you can).

TTC is really a Rocket Ride for new comers, I think even in Winters.

I do not know about your background and what type of work you might get here.

If you have a car, some more employment opportunities do crop up. You cannot manage long term without a car in this country.

I did miss employment opportunities because of lack of car like sales, security, jobs early in the morning at 5. Even for jobs that pay only $8/hour(usually) like security jobs you require a car!

Even if you target low-end jobs, cars do make a difference. It is easier to register in different agencies and collect payments from agencies. Not all agencies post the cheque or offer direct deposits.
